A huge rip off of At Close Range

It rips off james foleys 80's Classic in plot ( both loosely based on real events) , in tone, in style, in acting, in execution, in everything, the only thing thats missing is a hit madonna song

It's a far better film than ACR.

If they're both loosely based on real events in different countries (which you admit they are), how can you accuse one of ripping off the other? It's kind of ridiculous. David Michod is entitled to develop a story incorporating real life criminal elements from his country. If it has some passing resemblance to ACR so be it. I've seen both films and think they're quite different.🐭

Yeah man, totally. I just saw At Close Range a few days ago, and a poster on their message boards recommended Animal Kingdom.
This movie was a very weak shadow of ACR. The killing of the girlfriend/sexualization of the girlfriend, the criminal estranged family theme, protagonist cooperating with the cops AFTER the girlfriend death/rape (either one between the movies)
Animal Kingdom didn't show any bank robberies, and would have been VERY VERY difficult to figure they're bank robbers if one didn't read into the opening credits bank robbery pictures. The way they killed characters off in this movie was way too fast and loose. Joel's death left me shocked, but after that there was no tension because anyone was expendable to the story.
ACR had me hooked until the end, this movie's protagonist was a disconnected loser who had no emotion or credibility to his actions with the exception of crying in his gf's house and killing his uncle, and even then his uncle's killing was melodramatic. It felt like a deleted scene or something, not a way to end the movie. J is straight up going to prison, end of story, there's no getting around it. Shoddy work of making a movie, at best.

I liked ACR more, but I still think Animal Kingdom was also excellent. Jacki Weaver's bewitching performance alone elevated the film beyond good and made it great. She's the female answer to Christopher Walken in ACR!

I haven't seen ACR so I can't comment on it.

However, J didn't originally want to talk to the cops because he was scared of being tied in and charged. His dependence on his family at that point (as he was all alone in the world at 17 and living with a family he barely knew) was too strong for him to risk jail. However once Pope went and killed his girlfriend and he had hit squads coming after him he decided it wasn't worth it and gave it up. Then in a final twist he doesn't testify at trial and the brothers get out, making them think he's loyal, only for them to reveal it was so he could personally kill Pope himself (and presumably tell the cops everything just after).

I like close range but this isn't in the same class. It *beep* all over it for style and substance.
