don't understand the low ratings. LOVED THIS.

I can watch this movie over and over again (it's on Showtime a lot, but I plan on buying the DVD).

I'm 36, and this movie makes me feel like it's the 80s again. The story's great, the soundtrack is absolutely PERFECT (ALL the great 80s songs... my god. Just perfect)... and Ashley Greene looks exactly like every girl I had a crush on in the 80s (thick eyeshadow and all). The movie is pure nostalgia. The filmmakers did everything right. I seriously wish it was the early-to-mid-80s again. Life was so much better and more simple then.

The ode to John Hughes before the closing credits is a nice touch, too.

The movie isn't a romantic comedy or a goofy-ish love story (like Sixteen Candles or something)... it's definitely in the drama genre, which sets it apart from a lot of 80s romantic films.

I just don't understand the low ratings for this film. It's so friggin' good.

Anyone agree?

reply

Yes! I thought the film makers really captured the essence of the time. I loved the coming of age theme against that backdrop and the soundtrack was indeed pitch perfect. It made be happy to think about the younger generation watching this movie and discovering all those great songs for the first time...

I think its one of the worst films I've seen in a long time. Complete garbage, literally nothing happens, the characters have no depth, just a miserable screenplay.

Who's High Pitch?

I agree with the OP. While I have seen and enjoyed 'Adventureland' and 'Dazed and Confused' is one of my all time favorite films, I did not at all feel compelled to judge 'Skateland' against those two aforementioned films.

Viewed as a stand-alone movie, I enjoyed it very much and watched it several times. The characters, the situations, the music; they got it right. If anything, it made me wish 'Dazed and Confused' depicted the scene in the early 80's instead of 1976. Full disclosure: The early 80's were my "coming of age" times, and so this may be why 'Skateland' resonated with me more so than others who don't like it. Even so, I still thought it was a solid coming of age film that need not suffer being panned in comparison with other films of its type.

I thought it was okay not the best movie ever and boring at times but still good and watchable.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Ditto. It's not gonna win any Oscars, but I really enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed it more than Adventureland. My high school days were in the 80's, so that might be why it hits home with me. The soundtrack was great as well.

Wow, how'd I mss this movie when it came out? Very natural acting with a realistic storyline. The actors were impressive especially the father played by Cullen. I would recommend this gem that actually gives a realistic 80's feel to the movie. It's showing on cable now and I will definitely watch this again!
