Skateland vs. Adventureland

I already posted something similar on the Adventureland board.

However, I can't help but to think Skateland is going to get compared to Adventureland (which I really enjoyed). I am very excited for Skateland to premiere especially with the release of the trailer recently.

Lots of similarities between the 2 movies it seems.

-Teens at turning points in their lives.
-Summer jobs where the story revolves.
-Set in the 80's.
-Even the trailers have this erie similarity between them. (check out the trailer - http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1656214/exclusive-ashley-greenes-skateland-trailer-debuts.jhtml)

I understand there are some major differences as well in terms of what occurs so my apologies in advance if I am confusing some info. The obvious being Adventureland was billed as a comedy but it was more or less a dramedy and Skateland will be a drama.

I am definitely excited to see this movie when it comes out but I can't help but to think they will be very similar and maybe compared, I just hope it doesn't turn negative.

I see where you're coming from but from the couple of reviews I read it was mostly compared to Dazed and Confused. There was this one review that described it as a "more genuine Adventureland". I really liked Adventureland so that should be a good thing. Can't wait!

As soon as I saw the trailer for this I thought of Adventureland, but saying that I'm mildly obsessed with that film anyway and if this is anywhere near as good as that then I would be very happy indeed.

When I watched the movie, I also felt the Adventureland comparisons, only that movie was so much better. It was entertaining, more subtle, and more engaging. Even the music of Skateland seemed kind of lame. Everyone knows songs like "I'll stop the world and melt with you". It's like they didn't even try to convey a feeling and the movie only served the purpose of selling soundtracks.

This movie feels like an even more unoriginal Dazed and Confused, which is a more boring version of American Graffiti. At least Adventureland was based on the director's experiences post-college where this just feels like a really lame attempt at a coming of age tale.

I think they related it to American Graffiti actually.

I enjoyed both movies .... excellent mood and music really reflecting the era.

Both were slice of life, but Adventureland had more of a linear story progression. This one had the mood and pacing of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, minus the extreme humor and nudity, and it was also a bit slower.

The tragedy is also reminiscent of the teenage films of the era. The ending scene, though, was out of place ... it suddenly became a scene from a John Hughes movie, complete with accompanying music.

The script wasn't very tight, but for what it meant to be, I'd give it a 6.5 or 7.

I loved practically everything about Adventureland, except Ryan Reynolds didn't seem to fit the period.

Adventureland is better but this is a decent flick. So many new DVD releases out there. Just glancing at the new ones (http://www.filmcrave.com/dvd_new.php) it is hard to tell what is decent anymore.

I just watched this flick, and would give it the edge on adventureland. Both great films that I will no doubt watch again soon..

Adventureland 8.5/10

Skateland 9/10

Yes I'm a sucker for Indie/coming of age movies :)

to me Skateland was really Adventureland without the memorable characters, the emotion, or the pure sense of "coming of age" that that film had. And trust me, I'm unfortunately kind of a sucker for these sundance-y "coming of age" films", but this one just didn't do it for me.

Bear in mind, Adventureland is one of my favorite films of all time, so I am kind of biased in this category. But even just standing alone, the whole thing was just "meh".

This movie is not walf good as Advantureland.

I found 'Adventureland' a lot better but I'm sure others will think differently.

Yeah Jozy--we are both admittedly fans of Kristen--so Adventureland has the edge over Skateland. But the thing is--I became a big fan of her's only after watching her portray Em. However, I would flat-out deny that this was a chicken-or-egg causality dilemma of whether I loved Adventureland only because Kristen was in it--or did I like Kristen only because she starred in Adventureland. Rather it was equal helpings of both--a great actor cast in a role that would showcase her talent in an atmospheric setting that evoked feelings of nostalgia--portraying an almost surreal aura of what it was like to work in an amusement park during the mid-to-late '80s. Besides the superficial advantages which Adventureland had such as a better soundtrack and cinematography--in my opinion the script, direction, and acting were all superior to Skateland. But then again that's just my opinion.

This movie just didnt have the characters that adventureland had, plus the plot was even better.
