The investigation involved 14 film producers who had received tax credits from the film office. Charges were also filed against the producers of "The Scientist" after officials said they refused to provide documentation of their expenses.
The investigation found that "The Scientist" fraudulently obtained tax credits of more than $1.85 million in December 2008.
The executive producer of the film, Wendy Runge, and Matthias Saunders were charged with first-degree theft, which is a class C felony and carries a penalty of no more than 10 years and a fine of at least $1,000 and no more than $10,000, if convicted.
