Fantastic... despite any noted 'inaccuracies,' IMO. (spoilers)
Just watched the film, and I have to say, I was quite impressed. I thought the film had a great flow to it -- very fast-paced and yet it was also equally moving at times. The scenes with Allen's mother were very touching, and I felt like everyone gave stellar performances. Literally, I don't think anyone came up short in the slightest. I can't pick anyone who did better than the other, either. DeHaan was very charismatic in his role as Carr, but that was the point. I am planning to watch it again so I can see it with a fresh pair of eyes. (I like to watch a film I really enjoyed twice just to see if it's as good as I thought. Did the same with Her. No regrets!) I have had some doubts about Radcliffe in the past, even despite seeing him on Broadway and being very impressed. I have always felt like his acting on film came up short somehow, at least before I saw him in A Young Doctor's Notebook. In this film, he really takes it to a whole other level.
I have to say, he really was perfect here. Perfect. I had absolutely no complaints. I found his performance very moving, especially when he realizes who Carr truly is after their private "moment" at the park. I can't even pick a favorite scene because they were all great. I have to say, I did enjoy the scene where Allen is having the hallucinations where they are in the jazz club. I thought that was really well done and intriguing. I think I was as drawn in as Allen was, even. Very cool sequence.
My only moment of unease was during the sex scene. It's not because I have anything against it, but it was more than I was expecting, I guess! It was an important moment in the film, though, as it was Allen finally acknowledging his sexuality (in my opinion). It was very passionate, though, for sure. Good work done by all, really. The chemistry between DeHaan and Radcliffe was electric, as well. The fact that they're such great friends in real life would make sense. That's probably how they're able to have such great chemistry. Even with the sailor, I was quite impressed. It makes me excited to see Radcliffe's turn in The F Word, his most recent don't film, a romantic comedy.
I don't know what else I can say. My thoughts are quite jumbled at the moment. I'm going to be thinking about this film for a while. I can't believe it was done on such a small budget. The cinematography was fabulous. I loved the color palette and all of the shots were flawless. The montage (with the sex scene) was quite lovely as well. I loved the use of the recording playing over the montage. It made it very poignant.
Forgive me for specifically pinpointing Radcliffe here. He gave a great performance, but I don't want to undermine the others. I really enjoyed Hall as David Kammerer. I have only seen a few episodes of Dexter, but I honestly didn't even recognize him. He was fabulous. DeHaan goes without saying. He has impressed me for a while with his turns in Place Beyond the Pines and Chronicle. He truly is one to watch.
This cast was just stellar. Everyone. Olsen was fabulous as well. I do wish she could have had more screentime.
