Deserves a higher rating

As an A.C.O.D. myself, I thought the interactions among the main characters were very realistic. Like Carter, I experienced the same situations (parents getting back together, hiding parents relationship from their significant others, being in the middle) but as a kid so it was nice to be able to relate and have the same point of view as the main character. It's nice to know that even though I was a child, my feelings were valid then. I think the movie could have done without Jessica Alba or just used an unknown actress for her character because she really didn't add anything. And I don't know about anyone else but I think the clips during the credits were almost better than the actual movie. It was interesting to see other A.C.O.D.'s and non-A.C.O.D.'s outlook on marriage and divorce.

Realistic or not, it was still boring.

Of course it does. I personally think it deserves a 7.5, but a lot of my favorite films have low ratings on this site.

Don't you find that comedies are rated lowly on IMDB? For example, "There's something about Mary" is rated 7.1 and really it's one of the funniest comedies to have come out in a long time.

reply

I'm surprised the rating is so low. I gave it a 7/10. However, I never trust the ratings here.

"And she acted like I was teaching her about everything."

Yeah deserves a 7/10 at least. It was charming and often very funny, the gags probably went over the heads of some people.

Also it had Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jessica Alba in it (two of the most beautiful women to grace a screen) so deserves an extra point just for that.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but some of it was over-the-top or went with something crazy happening over character development. For example, when Amy Poehler's character went outside to smoke a cigarette and tearfully called her parents, I thought we were going to get some insight into her character or maybe someone would come out and talk to her, but instead they had her accidentally burn the house down.

And the ending was awful. I don't mind ambiguous endings, but they really did not pull it off at all.

I agree! These situations really go down just like in the movie!
(For me, anyway, I found it completely relatable.) It wasn't a hilarious movie but it does exemplify what it's like to be an adult child of divorce, all grief and strife included.
