Twisted, perverse, and entertaining

I went and saw The Happytime Murders today. It was directed by Brian Henson and stars Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Banks, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Leslie David Baker. The film is about a puppet private investigator and a human cop who try to solve a series of puppet murders. The movie is darkly twisted and weirdly perverse. The over the top nature of the story worked for me and I found myself enjoying the craziness. Some of the jokes aren't as funny as they could be, but there were a few good laugh out loud moments. I liked the chemistry between the lead puppet and Melissa McCarthy. Although parts of the story are somewhat predictable, it is still interesting and entertaining. Definitely not a film for everyone, but if you like sleazy puppets and aren't turned off by strong profanity and violence, you might get a kick out of The Happytime Murders. I rate The Happytime Murders a 7/10.

I read all the negative reviews beforehand and watched it with low expectations. Apart from a couple of dud moments, I actually enjoyed it. A lot of McCarthy's movies are quite profane, I'm surprised that people were shocked. I personally think she's at her most entertaining when she's F bombing.
