Can someone explain?

It's essentially a lost tribe (which is why the remake was called that). We're meant to believe they're an offshoot of evolution that just existed here for centuries, untouched by the outside world. They were being studied by the expedition in the 20's, who were then killed off, so no one ever found out about them.
