Just saw it

A movie with good production values, good actors, and a TERRIBLE screenplay. The pacing of this movie was god-awful, and if the film cut down on the amount of time the actors spent staring at each other with tears coming out of their eyes (seriously it felt like half of the movie) and instead used that made up time to develop characters and character interactions, the audience might actually understand why these people were crying over each other in the first place.

Not to mention that the filmmakers apparently made absolutely NO attempt to disguise the fact that Mulan is a woman. It's obviously going to be one of the most difficult challenges in making a live-action version of Mulan, and the movie doesn't even regard it as an issue even though she is CLEARLY a woman.

I DO NOT recommend it

I also cant understand how noone recognized her as woman. It was clear that she is a woman, she didnt take any actions to hide it. Not a good movie..

You have to use your imagination b/c I said the same thing thru the whole movie...until I heard the empire in the end. He said he has loooooong forgiven her. So that meant they knew she was a female eventully & out of respect kept their mouths shut b/c she was a daym good General. That's probablu why that other general betrayed her & didnt show up in the battlefield to help them. And than I didn't like how she went back hom to be dirt poor again..duh?? what happen to all the yen she made serving in the war..& u would think they would reward her after 12 yrs. Worst yet, when the prince came to visit her & her father...they made seem like when she turned around she would be glamour girl, especially the expression on the princes face w/ his jaws dropped. She turned around & daaaaym, as thru the entire film, the prince was prettier than her.

Those 2 also acted in Painted Skin 2gether & there no chemistry. She looks like an old young person to me & IDK why they keep throwing those 2 2gether.

"They snappin pictures of my brain
trynna get my mind frame!"

reply

the prince was prettier than her

Well, Chen Kun is prettier than a lot of actresses.

Her deciding to go back to her dad, in poverty, is seen as very noble in China, where filial piety is the highest virtue.

Something that I guess is part of the theme of the story. Women serving men is also a confucian virtue (vintage 400 BC), but serving one's parents is a BIGGER virtue and cancells out the others.

You must notice that Westerners -- especially in the US -- constantly compare other cultures' values to US values. As result they don't "get" that other cultures are -- DUH! -- DIFFERENT than US "culture"*. Thus the characters in a Chinese movie immersed in Chinese cultural mythology are going to reflect CHINESE values, and are going to act in keeping with those, not in conformity with those which are foreign to the culture, such as those in the US.
_____

*As there is more than one "China," there is also more than one "US."
_____

What they need to do is (1) get an education, and by that means (2) learn how to overcome their baseless chauvanist and jingoist condescension to other cultures based upon the sole fact that other cultures are DIFFERENT.

In simplest terms: they've got to learn that "different" is not spelled I-N-F-E-R-I-O-R. By comparison with China -- it has been a continuous civilization for over 4,000 years -- the US is an infant, in its view of itself, of reality, and the rest of the world. Humility is mandatory.

Well stated even though you will NEVER read this.😎

god yes couldn't agree more, pacing was terrible. took me 3 days to watch this movie and still I wasn't even watching it properly..plus the subs on my DVD didn't even make sense..!!

Can someone tell me, in the end the captain didn't end up with her right??? which i thought was stupid, and epscially when he "died" but later we find out he didnt!?! whhhhaaaaa-t!!

I'll go back and watch the disney version instead!

reply

Thank you for this.

I honestly wanted to mock them on the fact that a 12 year old kids movie is better than this garbage -- but maybe Disney's just really, really good at what they do.

I've watched 35 minutes of this now and the only thing I'm left feeling is an intense dislike of Vitas and anyone involved in making this garbage (except Zhao Wei, and even then I like her less now). I don't care about the characters or their motivations at this point, I just want them all to die. Especially Vitas.

This has to be the worst movie I've seen so far this year. Although I wish to clarify that this is January 23rd and that I've probably only watched 10 movies this year.

One of them being From Justin to Kelly.

This movie sucks.

It would have been great to see the chinese filmmaking take on Mulan if it hadn't been done with the execution of garbage.

The direction was woeful. Plot and character progression was pathetic.

The main problem was Zhou Wei. She was just too girly and let's be honest... BOOOORING. I wonder what happened to her. She used to be quite interesting in So Close.

Now someone like a younger Gong Li or Brigitte Lin would have brought it off.

Griffin

Evolution takes no prisoners.

reply

Brigitte's like Audrey Hepburn, there will never be an actress quite like her. She was amazing and legendary in her cross-dressing roles! She had an intense fierceness that made her cross-dressing characters believable.

reply

I really wanted to like this movie. I was prepared to suspend my disbelief at how Mulan looked in no way male (or even remotely masculine) but I just couldn't stand the horrifically bland cinematography/direction. It was just so boring to look at!

reply

Why was there no explanation for why the 'surprise attack army' never showed up? Why did they bail on them?
It annoyed me that Mulan was like: "It's cool brah, I just wanna go home or you can punish me." afterwards.

reply

A) this movie is supposed to be a fantasy/legend, hence your point about them not realizing she's a woman is moot.

B) If you couldn't stand the pace of this movie you're either young with no attention span, in that case mature and maybe you'll appreciate it more when you grow older. If not, you're an idiot I'm afraid.

reply

A) Simply saying the movie is "fantasy" doesn't mean all logical problems can be overlooked. The movie is still set in a reality where a woman is different than a man, and a woman isn't allowed to be in the army. The Disney movie got away with it because the animated character looked like a convincing man when she dressed up.

B) If maturing means "liking bad movies more" then I don't want to grow up.

reply

The original story is a two hundred word poem. It is a miracle anyone can stretch it to a two hour movie.
