Why does Mr. Fry dislike Florida?

I plead your indulgence, as it may be sometime (like never, sadly) before this series is shown in America.

If I remember rightly, he found it very soul-less: Full of modern buildings and beautiful, white teethed, suntanned people, but ultimately without any character.

Of course, he only really visited Miami if I recall.

Sounds like he only went to touristy Miami Beach, and only South Beach at that. I could take him to Little Havana, or Liberty City where the riots were. We've got character out da wazoo - and a copious supply of ugly people and historic buildings, if he's that way inclined.

reply

Downtown Miami is what he referred to as a hole, which I agree with. He seemed to have a bit less negativity for Miami Beach, although it was stated that it's just not his kind of place.

I love Miami Beach (specifically South Beach), personally, but can't argue at all with his conclusion of Downtown Miami.

reply

he liked the deco architecture in a sort of ironic way... yeah i think he has a lot of ignorant attitudes about a lot of things. he seems to like mountains... and animals... and not people or anything they do.

reply

I always thought that St. Augustine was really quaint and that's in Florida. I've never been to Miami but I don't think Art Deco is modern, isn't it a style from the 1920's? I seem to recall a complaint about all the art deco buildings in Miami.

reply

He didn't like the bland concrete architecture of Miami. He, like many non-natives, seems to forget that hurricanes would make short work of quaint little wooden structures. His inability to relate to current conditions in the areas he visited was a common problem in an otherwise entertaining production.

"...quaint little wooden structures..."

If that was a reply to my statement about St. Augustine being quaint, it doesn't make any sense. St. Augustine has cobblestone streets, the city is very old, has a lot of history, dates back to 1565 and it has a huge fort by the shore.

Feel victimized much? My comment had nothing to do with your post, I didn't even read it. It solely referenced his commentary in the film.

reply

Firstly I thought nearly all of Miami was heavily Cuban Influenced (which in my mind is a GREAT thing, given my wife is both Cuban and from Miami!) secondly, I think the oldest buildings in North America are the ones the Spanish built (were they in Florida?) in the 1400s;

He called Miami a hole. Not gonna argue with him.

reply

I believe he was only referring to Miami, though. A comment that is mostly true, too.

as a floridian i was pretty peeved at his reaction, south beach is catered to tourists, what'd he expect. go to the west coast or north of Okeechobee and you'll think your in a different state. florida is as diverse a state as there is, well not really terrain wise, but people wise.

laughs are cheap, I'm going for gasps

reply

I'm guessing that he disliked it because he was observant. The place is a hole.

Mr. Fry did not get Florida at all. Downtown Miami is hardly a representation of the state. He was looking for the heart of the city, but apparently couldn't hear that Afro-Cubano style beating.

There's a zillion other places he could have gone. Tampa Bay, for starters, but maybe I'm biased!

I would wonder why it would be shown at all in America. We do actually live here.

Sometimes you should look at yourself from someone else's eyes. Gives a new perspective in the least.

I live here but I found the documentary entertaining, enlightening and worth watching. However, what I didn't like was the occasional obsequious deference to the über wealthy. It was almost vomitous to watch. That turned me off.

reply

Because we live here. We already know. He made the show to give his countrymen a taste of our culture.

reply

It was Miami and its surroundings that he hated. He did show that he enjoyed airboating in the Everglades in Florida.
