This movie blew me away

I really thought the whole premise was thought provoking....the writing was great and Steve Carrell was excellent. The last scene was particularly impressive. Great movie...

Good point, it was thought provoking. Throughout the film there was a "hurry up and wait for the world to end" feel to it based on character's actions and I couldn't help feeling what they were feeling. I enjoyed the whole film, especially the last few scenes.

Was a truly beautiful movie.

Agreed. Steve Carrell looked so young in this film, I thought it was from 15 years ago. This film has a dreamlike quality (I love the premise as well), and Carrell continues to show amazing range as a comic/actor. He is the closest thing we have to a modern day Peter Sellers

"For dark is the suede that mows like a harvest"

he's like an american daniel auteuil.

We have a pool and a pond...pond be good for you.

I really wanted to like it, but there were some huge glaring errors in it. I almost turned it off when he loads sleepy girl up in the Cessna to fly back home to England. There is no point in the United States or north America where one could get anywhere close to England. You couldn't even Island hop to England with it's 400 miles range. Bad writing.

reply

Your issue with that is valid, although a couple of people on here did the calculations and concluded it was possible to island hop . For all we know Dodge's father decided to take Penny to a friend of his with a more capable plane. We didn't hear the planning of the trip, so it is plausible.

reply

WHAT??? A FILM with a glaring logical error? Shoot, man, you better stick to films like Back to the Future and Oz and stuff...you know, ones that are REAL.

Hilarious. You must almost turn off a lot of movies.

But did she really say that her family lived in England? She was from England, yes, but I don't remember saying they lived there.

EDIT: She just said that she missed the plane to fly to her family. But her family could have been living in another country than England. You are just assuming it's England because of her origin.

I'm still teary eyed from a 3rd viewing......Best film .....alot better than 'argo' sheesh.....this film really hits home.

SPOILERS GALORE!!!

I just discovered this movie and found it delightful! I have watched it several times and enjoyed it more each time.

The stage is set at the beginning with the poster wall describing various ways we might handle connecting with others at the time of the planet's imminent demise...eff a virgin and hire a hunter to kill you being the top two if I recall correctly, and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World having no takers at all.

The combination of the satire, road trip, and romantic comedy genres worked well for me. The protagonists (each a total loser in intimate relationships) become comrades on a quest whose friendship ripens into love just in time for the end of the world. Each and every one of us lives in a world that will someday end, just not necessarily at the same time as it ends for someone else. So the implications are not limited to an apocalyptic scenario.

The apocalypse device worked great for me as a means not only to compress time but also to justify a series of satirical events that demonstrate how we compensate for a lack of meaning in our lives. The apocalypse provides an indisputable deadline that eliminates the excuses, excesses, habits, and patterns that we use as coping mechanisms. Work, hedonism, running away, getting someone else to do the dirty work, buying fake friends, and attempting to control the uncontrollable are all satirized.

The performances were very good, especially that of Adam Brody, who played the narcissistic ex-boyfriend. But the best work of all came from Steve Carrell. His aptly named Dodge is numb and wooden, completely out of touch with his own and others' feelings. Over the course of the story we watch him come to life, like a puppet becoming a real boy. He starts to listen to another person, to care about that person, and ultimately fall in love. Carrell's performance was both realistic and touching as Dodge becomes a feeling person. Putting Penny's desire to see her family ahead of his own need to be with her was an act of courage and compassion that demonstrated the depth of his love for her. He chose her happiness ahead of his own desire not to die alone.

Although Keira Knightley's character Penny was more broadly drawn, the character did develop from a Manic Pixie to a real girl. Penny's realization that she had finally found the right man worthy of growing up for and spending the last moments of her life with led to the transcendent ending. I loved the last scene in the movie and can watch it over and over again. It's about finding the intimate friend you can lie down with, listen to, talk with, and comfort at the end of the world. It would be wonderful if we could each find such a friend for the end of our respective worlds.

aptly named Dodge

I didn't think of it that way. You have a way with words. Great post all around!

Plotholes and all. I loved it and shed some realy big tears at the last 15 mins. or so. He puts on that album with "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" the power goes and she shows up with the dog whimpering. Kleenex must have got rich off that alone, not to mention laying in bed where he tries to ease her fears. C'mon tough guys I know a few of you broke down. That was one of the most beautiful endings I've seen in a movie. I've watched the ending a few times now as it will live on in my thoughts for a long time to come if I want to take a girl to one of these feeling movies.

I think this is one of those movies that will be reassessed favorably in time by the critics. There are some minor hitches in the film, but the subject matter and how it was handled are quite good...as is Carell's performance.

For me, it was no more than a groaning moment. It didn't bother me that much, and I just accepted it.

reply

Is there a reason it didn't bother you that much? Do you have trouble appreciating emotive films? Or did you generally just feel that this film had no emotional heart to it all? Which frankly would seem weird considering the number of people who have got emotional about the final scene. Did it really do nothing for you?

I really liked this movie. I was actually surprised that I had never heard of it before. It was quirky, funny and just enjoyable all around. The acting was solid and the story line was very interesting where it totally could have been boring. I agree. Great movie!
