steve being with kiera is truly the end of the world

so hilarious.

what could have been a really touching movie gets the hollywood treatment where a 50+ guy gets involved with one of the most beautiful women in the world.

pass.

the ending is the best btw.

I mean, Hollywood definitely has a problem with casting young beautiful women as the love interests for old dudes...but Steve Carell has that cute dad thing going on so I didn't mind. He's not unattractive, let's put it that way.

"What race are you? If you don't tell me I'll just...assume the worst."

reply

I think Steve Carell is extremely hot.

This is what made me give the movie a chance anyway. If they cast another 'age appropriate' partner for either of them, I would have skipped it.

The movie made a point of their age difference and Dodge's guilt after they have drunken sex, but yeah, I think this movie would have worked better with an older woman like Laura Dern or Marisa Tomei.

I would usually agree with you, as the idea of a 20+ year age gap is generally preposterous.

That being said - I think it was okay with Steve Carell and Keira Knightley as the leads. They had decent chemistry and therefore were able to make it work. I also found Steve looked younger than his true age, which helped.

I also find myself currently the Keira to a Steve Carell, so the May/December relationship doesn't seem outside of the realm of possibility to me... especially given they were both alone and facing the end of the world. They complemented and needed one another.

It's the end of the world. I don't think societorial norms are in play any more
