Blu Ray does not look like HD

I had a chance to watch this movie tonight and enjoyed it. Any independent film maker that can pull off a western I take my hat off to. However, this film came to me on Blu Ray and in no way shape or form even looked close to HD. Also many close ups seemed to be out of focus or were soft. Anyone notice this stuff?
