Dr. Vaseegaran was as old as his parents!? WTF?

I could not work out why the old Dr/inventor guy was as old as his parents, not to mention the girl young enough to be his granddaughter chasing after him. Film seemed OK, but terribly miscast starring role of some old fat geezer.
