Do people in India actually take this movie seriously?

I know it's a big hit, but do they see it as anything other than a violent spoof movie?

The script seems like it was written by high school students and the "science" behind the robot is straight out of cartoons. It was like an R-rated, live-action version of Inspector Gadget. I'm actually surprised the robot didn't have jets built into its feet so that it could fly. The big fight at the end was just beyond ridiculous.

I mean I know there are a lot of cultural differences, but there wasn't a single part of this film that in any way resembled reality. I'm not just talking about the science fiction aspects of it either. The way everyone just accepted the existence of a super-advanced, magical do-anything robot was pure fantasy. Even the silliest American family movies involving robots are handled more realistically.

It's like they started off making a silly kids' movie and then decided to load it up with violence.

This movie is listed as being part comedy, and I did laugh quite a bit, but I suspect I was laughing at the wrong scenes, for the wrong reasons.

If you treat it as a comedy, the movie isn't that bad. Yes a lot of the parts did seem ridiculously childish such as the mosquito part, but as long as you don't take it seriously, it's great for laughs.

It's actually quite a bit of fresh air after all the super serious Hollywood films.

Nobody takes movies in India seriously. Its just entertainment and a way to blow off steam after a hard day's work.

So they know that movies like this are considered a joke in the rest of the world? That rather than being seen as India's answer to the Terminator movies, people equate it with the likes of the Americanized Power Rangers TV show?

Movies are made in a different way in India than in America. In US, you have movies made specifically in different genres like Action, Horror, Comedy, Musical etc and also you have independent dramas or comedies for people who want something different.

In India, the filmmakers add a bit of everything within one movie to appeal to as many people as possible. That's why it feels like a potpourri - a bit of romance, a bit of action, some comedy, some songs and dances thrown in and also some drama. If they dont do this, producers wont make much money because we dont have big enough audiences for specific genres.

I guess it's a cultural thing because being an American, I have a hard time seeing this movie as anything other than a slightly less comical version of Inspector Gadget.

It's like a Saturday morning children's show from the 1970s, only with better special effects and violence.

And that's the problem: when you shove as much crap in there to appeal to as many people as possible, the quality of the film suffers as a result. One thing people need to know when making quality entertainment is that there is no way to please everyone.

No, the problem is that you american and you are not part of the target audience to this movie. By the way is there any example of any kind of "foreign" ripoff from any american movie that americans would consider superior to the original red white and blue? I Didn't think so. Is there any "american version" of any "foreign film" considered better for other then americans? Neither.

There are more focused movies produced in India. Its just that what oft gets sent overseas seems to be the odder stuff. Khris 2 I saw a year or so ago and its one of those more focused movies.

But really. Look at the Transformers movies where you have about a half hour of romance or school daze, toss in an occasional Transformer, and whatever.

As with everything else. Theres alot of variance. You just have to sometimes look around for it. Much like anime.

And yeah. Very rare can we in the US ever make an adaption right of something from some other country. In fact sometimes it seems all they want is the title. "The Prisoner" being a recent disaster. Hell. We cant even remake our own stuff without screwing it up.

Luckily the US doesnt have a monopoly on that skill. ahem...

Bollywood makes enough money with other markets then the american all around the world (Russia, Africa, Latin America, Middle East, South-East Asia).
