I think you'd understand if you watched the movie; which I'm not saying in a nasty way, I'm just saying it as a statement of fact. Basically it enables them to save heaps on CGI. They go to Mars and when they get there they move around a lot - on a spaceship, on the planet, in the buildings, and 'under the planet' - I don't want to give any spoilers - and do things which would be very expensive if the movie was live action and the 'stunts' had to be done in front of a green-screen etc. The way they've done it means that they can basically do a Toy Story animation without the animators having to do all the work that's usually involved with hair and facial expressions etc. All the really hard stuff in other words!
:-)
Do you see what I mean?
I think if they keep on going with that method of film-making it will eventually produce great results and will enable them to create really good movies using this hybrid style; which in turn will make the technology more readily available and start to allow every-day people to use it. I look at modern computer games and think that one day games like Grand Theft Auto will look exactly like reality - right down to the people's faces - and that the day will come when you and I can basically make a full-length feature film with our iPhone XXIV. So while this movie looks a bit crappy, I'm hoping that it will lead to a new way of making films that will eventually filter down to us...
