There was a nice idea in here somewhere. It seems like there could have been a story about class differences rather than racial. Blacks and Hispanics aren't always sympatico but their conflict isn't big enough or funny enough to exploit.
This crappy movie was just so UNFUNNY. Whitaker is an amazing actor but if the character and the jokes don't work, even an Oscar-worthy actor like Whitaker won't make it work. Mencia, on the other hand, can be funny--as a comedian. As an actor in this movie, he was just DULL, BoRING, FLAT, and unfunny.
The two leads are okay. Not an Ugly Betty fan but having grown up with people who look like America Ferrara, i can't help but find her cute. Unfortunately, neither she nor the guy playing the Sidney Poitier/Guess Who's Coming to Dinner/highly-educated black doctor role had no personalities, no flaws. They were just there. They didn't really have a conflct either since their fathers were insignificant goofballs.
Feel sorry for people who sat thru this in the theater. Poor script, uninspired direction, characters with nothing to do. To quote Ebert, "awkward for the actors, and contrived from beginning to end."
When will a high-caliber director and a smart screenwriter create a comedy for minority characters that works? the movie Hitch worked. Why couldn't this work?
