What's with the long permed hair of the male lead? What were they thinking?

He was supposed to flashy and image conscious, hence the term "Modern Boy." The hair, the car, the clothes, it was all apart of his image.

I'm interested in the images of the so-called "jazz age" and the clothes, the car, the music, everything else works, but not the long permed hairstyle. Can you give me any historical references? Who wore hair like this?
