Did I miss something? (spoilers lie within)

Watched the film, and I thought it was ok. I think Woody was awesome as can be expected but I didn't really see it go anywhere.
A couple of touching moments (hospital scene with Kat, the "sentencing") but not sure what else?

I normally like films like this but just not this one. I didn't dislike it either.
What I'm saying is: I don't get the hype?

Oh, I think this is a comedy in the way that True Romance was a comedy, if you get me?

I usually don't like this kind of black comedy, but that is different. It has a meaningful message: idiot deeds that come from a pure, native and innocent emotions may not have a good effect on the oneself, but for sure they inspire other people and give them courage to do the right things .

This idea has been discussed a lot in movies before; Forrest Gump, Nell, My name is Khan for example.

I liked the plot very much this time....... original and different

This also didn't do it for me, and I think it's because this movie doesn't have a defined tone. It was sort of an action movie, a little bit of a comedy, a bit of a drama... but it didn't do any of those very well and it overall felt like it couldn't decide what kind of a movie it was. And it was advertised as a comedy, which it mostly isn't.

reply

It was advertised wrong, which isn't something to blame on the movie, but I liked that it didn't have defined tone, why should it? Why are you so desperate to have that pretext placed upon it? It was set as a real-life story, and real life is a bit of everything at any given time.

reply

I thought it was based on the life of some real guy. It could very well have been. Yes, I read the statement at the ending about it all being fictional and any similarity being coincidental. But still, it could. So, I kinda liked it.

When Defendor said "Bullets don't hurt me" I slapped my forehead and said "Oh no." He actually believed it!!! I know a couple of guys who are more or less retarded like him and if the same situation (that shooting as depicted in the movie) happened to them, they might believe bullets can't hurt them too.

reply

Yes, my desperation is really apparent, isn't it? I'm so desperate for a tone!

It would be nice though, because the lack of one is why this movie doesn't work.

Tone is filmmaking... hell, storytelling 101. The absence of a defined tone makes it harder to establish an emotional connection to the movie or the characters, so you don't care as much, if at all. Your argument that "it's a real life story so no tone required," is nonsense. Even movies that are based on true stories have a tone. Well, good ones, anyway.

To put it simply, this movie doesn't know what it's doing. It's technically fine and the acting is good, but it's like having a pizza with strawberries, corn, ice cream and chicken noodle soup on it. Those things are great on their own but you put them together and the result sucks.

This movie is great in my opinion.

I can however understand people not being fond of the style and complex tone, not being able to identify with crime ridden areas and I can understand people who have the underlying themes go over their head such as Dantes.

...That however is as far as my understanding goes.

It is a very well acted film that deals with some very somber topics with melancholy humour throughout. Questioning the status quo, concequences of actions, the impact of one, innocence, elements of capitalism (captains of industry), herd mentality, vigilantism and other interrelated topics.

The main character is very brave and endearing as are his friends and the villains are certainly built up well to be hated by the audience. The prostitute is developed to emoting disgust and anger and then for many (that I know) grows on them.

Some times in this world people accept so much with complex sensationalized reasoning when on the most basic level they are unable to justify that acceptance with their highest held morals.

I found it a tragic and poignant story which ingeniously managed to make you laugh half the time at both a believable nutter and his total dedication to truths we have long since abandoned.

That's retarded. If the lack of a tone makes a movie bad, then what keeps the Coens, Tarantino, Kubrick, Scorcese, & countless other directors above water?

The knack to flying lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.
