Better than KICKASS but SUPER is slightly better

Defendor could've been great but clunky subplots in the latter part of the film kinda messed up the chances of this movie to get a cult status but SUPER (2010) has a far more well written script and uses bits from both Defendor and Kickass..

That's a good way of putting it.

Super quickly became one of my favorite films because it nailed the genre completely. It had the entertaining flare of Kick-Ass with the more psychological and thoughtful edge of Defendor, so really it was the best of both worlds. Still, all three are way ahead of many of their rivals in the "superhero" genre in general.

what else is there? i wanna see more like defendor, kick ass and super

reply

I didn't like Kickass at all.
But I loved Defendor, looking forward to SUPER! :)

1.Kick-Ass (2010) (8/10) (my 2nd favorite film of 2010)
2.Super (2010) (7/10, maybe a 6.5) (Ellen Page mostly carried the film though)
3.Defendor (2009) (6/10, maybe a 5.5) (Thumbs Down)

Kick-Ass is clearly the most memorable of the three films.

For me Kick-Ass blew this film away.

Another similar one is Special (2006), starring Michael Rapaport.

Well, now that I've watched Defendor last night, I guess I've seen the "Big Four" so I can finally compare them all. I also vaguely remember watching Mystery Men and thinking it was ok, but I can't remember if they actually had superpowers or not, so I won't count that.

My favorite has to be either Super or Special, its pretty neck and neck. Both had guys that I found likeable, just like Woody's Defendor character, but I found the other 2 guys a little more relateable. I'm about the same age Rapaport was when he did Special, so maybe that's part of it, part of why I could relate to him a little more than Kick-Ass. And I just thought Rainn was a decent guy as well, can relate to the awkward underdogs with good hearts that aren't always appreciated or understood by society at large.

I don't think Woody's character was retarded, I don't think retarded people could pull off what he did while dressed as Defendor (fighting tactics, etc). I just think he wasn't too book educated (other than comics). I did find him more likeable than relateable. I find it funny on most of these boards what criteria people use to deem a character likeable or not...usually the ones deemed unlikeable are just acting human. Its like characters aren't allowed to have flaws and have to be socially perfect to be likeable or something, bums me out a bit, so I guess if I was a superhero, I'd try to do away with that mindset lol /Rant

I just wish they'd do one where the guy had more of a white collar type job and was feeling unsatisfied with his life so he wanted to be a superhero to find purpose, then I could really relate lol Kind of like these movies meets Fight Club. Since all these guys are more blue collar (and Kick-Ass is still in school). Surely there's a happy medium between that and Bruce Wayne/Tony Stark. Kick-Ass got a bit OTT for me with the insertion of Hit-Girl, but I haven't seen it since it was in theatres. I'd have to watch it again to see if I preferred it to Defendor. But just for the sake of doing a list, here's mine as of today:

1. Super
2. Special
3. Kick-Ass
4. Defendor

Tie goes to Super for now because I loved the soundtrack (Cheap Trick, Tsar). The director seems to love power pop like me, so props for good music taste. Plus I'm a sucker for a good ending narration monologue and that one choked me up a bit lol Special was short and sweet, no time to drag. Leaves you wanting more. I did like them all, I just felt Defendor dragged a bit more than the others and I found Woody's character likeable, but couldn't relate quite as much.

I did like how he didn't hook up with Kat Denning's character (unlike in Super), since it kind of strains credibility when everyone's always hooking up in movies, especially the awkward types. Don't get me wrong, I'm cheering them on, love is beautiful and the heart can't help who it falls for, its just not realistic for it to happen EVERY time. Its cool they kept it innocent, but a bit more sexual tension between Woody and Kat would have been ok, since it IS possible to feel protective and attracted to the same person, contrary to popular belief. And apparently I'm not as hung up on age differences as most. The relationship in Special was believable and pretty cool, since they were both awkward (his self doubt, her speech impediment), so that explained her not talking to him until later on and why she'd be possibly into him.

i think Mystery Men deserves a place at the table before Kick-Ass, though it was more comedic than the others. Kick-Ass played itself off as a realistic take on superheroes but at its heart it was pretty standard superhero fare.

Kick-Ass is WAY too over-the-top and stylized to be anything close to realistic. (The character off Hitgirl alone demolishes any realism.) It tries to come off as a humorous but sober deconstruction of the superhero genre, but, in the end, it's just a self-satisfied adolescent fantasy that is not nearly as smart or "edgy" as it thinks it is. I much prefer Mystery Men because it has no such pretenses.

Originality needs a reboot.

I have to disagree. Super felt just odd to me, especially the sexual relationship between the characters and in the end, I was left with an somehow depressive feeling. so, from those 3, I would say that Super is the weakest, but just in my personal opinion.
I would give Kick Ass a 8/10, Defendor 6.5/10, Super maybe 5.8/10.

reply

Griff the Invisible is another one.

reply

Super isn't necessarily supposed to be a happy movie. Altough it's not very nice when a movie leaves you kinda depressed,it does show the movie did effectively move you.

reply

Super is the best, by far. This was too melodramatic

reply

Super tries too hard to be "edgy" and hip. Defendor was more naturalistic and less contrived.

Originality needs a reboot.

reply

Maybe I am prejudiced against Woody and think the big forehead guy is naturally funny

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

reply

I think Super is the worst with kickass being the best, but maybe i've got to rewatch Super and Kickass for a better judgement.
