That's actually embarrassing how much better De Niro in particular looks with the free software. IMO I thought the de-aging effects were subpar. They all just looked really old from start to finish.

The free software used the de-aged version of the actors as a starting point. The free software should have used the original unaltered footage of the actors as a starting point.

reply

And? It's free software, took a few days and basically no manpower. There shouldn't be any excuse making here, Netflix spent like $170 million on this movie.

reply

I'm pretty sure Scorsese played Netflix like a fiddle.

reply

thats what i thought first. but since it replaces the whole face anyway, it doesnt make a difference. its not like just more makeup

reply

In some of those shots I could see a bit of Travis Buckle era DeNiro

reply

Much better. Dinero looks like an old geezer with dyed hair and Botox in many, whereas the free software actually made him look young.

Before & After De-Aging Effect On Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, And Joe Pesci In The Irishman

Wow that was much better. Shame on Netflix and Scorsece.

I didn't know there was free software that could do that. Apparently, Scorsese didn't, either.

There's two important things you have to bear in mind with this comparison.
Firstly, the free software is being used on the already de-aged characters from the movie. If the free software was applied to how the actors actually looked, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good.
Secondly, even though the free software makes them look younger, with bigger eyes and more vibrant skin, they also look simpler and more cartoon-like, with most of the detail in the texture missing. I guarantee you the original will hold up far better than this free software version will.
