One peformance that will probably be overlooked...

As great as De Niro, Pacino and Pesci were I think one of the best performances was Dominick Lombardozzi (Herc from “The Wire”) as Fat Tony Salerno, absolutely unrecognisable but totally brilliant, he’ll probably be overlooked by most but he was incredible.

That was Herc, I didn’t even know that. Agreed great performance.

I wouldn’t have even known it was him if I hadn’t known he was in it before I saw it, he was one of the standouts for me, outside of the main 3 I think he and Stephen Graham (Tony Pro) were the actors who had the best material to work with.

Stephen Graham needs to dial down his guido-ness. It was inspiring when he did it as Al Capone, but it looked like he was retreading the same persona for The Irishman.

reply

Me too!!
He was great in this movie and I loved him in The Wire also.

I haven't watched The Wire but I was impressed by his acting. The character wasn't immensely likeable when you first see him but the acting was on point. Even the real-life comedian that played that "good-looking mobster with the shades" (sorry the name escapes me now) did a good job for someone who, as far as I know, did not do any acting before.

As a reviewer put it, everyone -- no matter how small the part -- brought their 'A game' in this movie. Nobody wants to look like a slouch next to the acting heavyweights like De Niro, Pesci and Pacino, and so they did the best they could with the lines given.

reply

He’s a lot younger than the character he plays, it wasn’t until he’d been in a few scenes that I realised it was Herc from “The Wire” he nailed the role though, pure gangster through and through.

Agree that the actor playing Joe Gallo did a good job as well, wish they had used him a bit more.

I don't love Raymond Romano but I really liked his goofy lawyer character. When he does that tidbit with DeNiro to get him to admit that he stole those hindquarters was priceless.
