Scorsese, CGI and authenticity

I heard Scorsese saying it would not be authentic to get younger actors to play the stars when they were younger.

Coppola made it work pretty well when he used DeNiro as the young Brando.

Have more faith in your abilities and your audience.

It's a grand-slam picture from a visionary artistic powerhouse of a director. I think he trusts his audience just fine and knows that we want to see De Niro nail every scene at every age, not wait around for that behemoth to show up on the screen.

I just did another post on the age issue, because it really bugs me and I think it detracts from the movie, but what if DiCaprio had played the young Sheeran? Obviously a moot point, but that seems like it may have worked much better than having De Niro do it all.

I just watched the scene where "younger" DeNiro beats up the store clerk and he still moved like an 80 year old man weakly kicking someone. That scene looked totally silly.

reply

Right - it looked so silly, especially at the end when he awkwardly lifts his non-kicking foot up and puts it down like he was losing his balance.

reply

Yea, that scene was brutal. Younger actors definitely would have made it better.

reply

I thought the exact same thing. They could have done with a stunt double there ha.
