Such a great film!

This is the first truly great film of 2013. Very much a worthy follow up to 'The Avengers', and it MIGHT beat out Iron Man 2 as my favorite of the three Iron Man movies.

Marvel Phase 2 is off to a great start!

The movie gets everything right but maybe its number one strength is the fact that they cover new and exciting ground. Downey again brings a winning personality to play as Stark; he finds his pathos, too. Don Cheadle certainly has the acting chops to hang with Downey. Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin is not what he seems and wonderful. No one, not even the villains are one dimensional characters. Guy Pearce is perfect in his role and, at the end, you can see why he was cast. Gwyneth Paltrow and Rebecca Hall certainly add sex appeal but beyond that they also deliver real performances and truly deep characters. This is Pepper Potts best film by far and is every bit the perfect match for Stark. The interaction and the relationships all work well and are truly a highlight of the entire movie. All the dialogue is superb. You would expect nothing less from a Shane Black film. This ranks right up there if not surpasses Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Critic quotes just like that back up this statement. It's NOT just fan talk.

But is it still the best movie of 2013?

Well?

Phase Two will be legendary.

As for this film, Iron Man 3 is as satisfying as any sequel in history. First, there are real consequences to Tony Stark’s ego that linger from The Avengers. Stark was shaken to his very core by the events of Avengers. He's anxiety ridden. As he said to Fury at the end of Iron Man 2, he was doing right by Pepper but his relationship with her has not helped his emotional problems. The time that Iron Man 3 spends focused on Tony Stark’s internal struggle is time well-spent. As was the case in Iron Man and Avengers, Stark makes for a compelling character. What's so great here is that they add to the character and truly does deliver a compelling character study. As Stark is developed and put through his paces, the movie masterfully turns to intriguing plot twists pertaining to trying to find the Mandarin (and later in the film, Pepper Potts), staving off A.I.M. and Killian, and making the film action-packed with big aerial battles and conflicts that are as thrilling as any ever put on film. It's amazing how substantive and surprising all those narratives turn out to be. Also, the action sequences in Iron Man 3 are the most thrilling seen in a Marvel-based movie not called Avengers.

This critic review sums it up best...

It’s an intelligent movie that actually works way above the level set up by a lot of previous comic adaptations. Without question, the makers of this movie went all the way in making it a remarkable experience for everyone. To their credit, they never assumed that the hype or good will of the first two films or Avengers was good enough to put butts in the seats. They really respect the source material but they’ve accentuated the believable and realistic angles of a great story. The Mandarin and the plot twist they used are as far away from the books as it gets yet it all works wonderfully. This is a movie about great characters first. Staying true to the source material is important to Marvel but flexibility is also a key. The plot stemming from that is amazing and only serves to add to a great story. Everything was juggled perfectly but I expected no less from this crew. They don't call it Marvel for nothing.

Yes, it is a great film.

Yet, I know the critics liked it but I've never needed critics to validate what I know to be a great film. I'm my best critic.

I loved every minute of it.

It's a great film because Tony is a great character. Sure, RDJ brings him to life like no other could but, bottom line, it's the character depth that elevates this movie. Tony Stark lives with intention. He walks to the edge and often beyond. He also plays with abandon. But now he appreciates his friends and his place in history.

Great character growth through the entire trilogy.

reply

Yes, it's the character growth that makes the IM movies work, but I think it's RDJ that infuses Tony with the likeably arrogant charm that fills theaters. No RDJ, no mega-blockbuster series.

reply

RDJ can even take credit when he does finally walk away. The character is top of the list because of him. Kind of what Sean Connery did for Bond.

reply

This really speaks to his mindset and where he is going from this point forth. It’s true character development and advancement.

reply

Marvel owning the best three adventure films of the entire year should surprise no one. (One through Fox Studios)

reply

ASM2 looks like it could be fun like a video game but I expect a shallow film.

Guardians could be a big miss or a big hit. There will be no middle ground with that one.

DOFP and Captain America The Winter Soldier look epic. I can't even begin to see how those can miss.

Darn tootin!

Right about American Hustle and right here.

When you are being understanding you are connected to your soul. Marvel films like this one help you do exactly that.

reply

Marvel can be worked into the design of every life, meeting an individual need as well as a pervasive need in society.

reply

Downey and Paltrow are CLASSIC. That’s not to say every major character didn’t shine at one point it’s just that when the beats mattered, the big guns when front and center.

reply

No film in recent memory has delivered more scene stealing moments than Avengers did. It's true that it embraces it's identity. It does so and it pure greatness. How could Marvel top that? They knew it before hand so they went in a bold direction yet just as interesting with Iron Man 3.

Having this and The Wolverine in the cinemas at the same time was something special. It's like Civil War and X-Men Apocalypse being in the cinema together right now at the same time.
