kingdom hearts Re: chain of memories! Decisions

I suppose most of you have heard of the 'chain of memories' which had originally been released on Nintendo DS was apparently re-released on a Playstation 2 format.
I had no idea.
It's a funny coincedence. I recently decided to start playing the kingdom hearts games all over again and I walk into a store and see that chain of memories is now in a version I can play. I was really looking for another game, but I saw this one instead.
Here's the dilema. I read about the chain of memories storyline, (since I didn't have a way to play it) and I wasn't too interested in it (not like kingdom hearts 1 and 2, with massive storylines and worlds.) There doesn't seem to be much going on with this story part. It seems more like a filler or side story to me. And since people had said you don't have to play or know the story of chain of memories to play kingdom hearts 2 I wasn't worried about it. But now I'm not sure.
Have any of you played it? And if so, is it good and worth it? It seems there's really just one world to travel to in the game and a lot of battles.
If not (I'm somewhat hoping it's not) I'd rather spend my money on the game I was seeking that day and start over with the original game series.
Your review, opinions, how it stacks of to the KH1 and KH2?

imo it's just as good as KH1 and 2. and i think it has the coolest storyline. no chain of memories isn't a filler or side story, this is canon with the storyline. though it's not shy to make it's use of filler (disney worlds). speaking of which, you go to all the disney worlds you went to in KH1, excluding deep jungle. but your mainly going up floors in castle oblvion. and you do kind of need to play this to understand KH2, you miss character backgrounds and introductions if you don't. and you don't fully get what happened to riku, and why sora was sleeping in that weird pod for a year. granted it's not "essential" to understand KH2, but it definentily helps. it's like missing the 2nd movie in a trilogy.

i'd say it's worth getting, it's got a cool storyline and an interesting battle system implementing cards from the original game, cool organiztion members, and you get to play as riku. also CoM was originally released for the GBA, not the DS.

This is an essential part. Not only do you get more time with Organization members, but you learn more about their inner-workings, more about Riku's life between games (OVERLY IMPORTANT) and some more development of themes and events from both main series games.

Also, to be fair, the card-based battle system kicks serious amounts of butt and, when you master it, makes you feel like a grand champion for doing so well with it.

After witnessing this entire game's storyline, I realized it IS an ESSENTIAL to understand what KH2 was really about.

OMG YOU NEED TO GET THIS.
I was so obsessed with Kingdom Hearts when I was younger but didn't have a PS2. I had a gameboy advance though, so when this came out I jumped at it! And I was not let down. It's amazing. It has my favorite storyline of all games so far. It felt good just going through worlds in the dark in my room. I love the original music too. It's fantastic.
People who just pick up KH2 after the first one will be so confused, this is pretty necessary to the game. It was always meant to be.
