Sean Macguires Accent??!!

Why with such a large British cast, did they get Sean to use an American accent??

Still, it shows promise. some of my favorite sit coms, when you go back and watch the pilot etc,are clunky in the first few episodes, so I think given a chance this will get alot funnier once the characters are established.

I still like it, but give Sean his real accent!!!!

Well -also as an American-, I too felt insulted by the choice to let goof-up Krod have an American (perhaps Canadian?) accent. However, then I realized that Krod is written as a genuinely good-hearted person whose ineptitude does not change the fact that he is indeed "The Golden One." Also, who on that show isn't inept?

Did you know that the creators have stated that "Krod" is actually the insult "Dork" spelled backwards? Strange that British people would use an American insult like that...I guess "Tig Mandoon" just doesn't have the same ring...

reply

I believe that the creator / writer is American? which may explain the use of a name that is "Dork" spelled backwards.

I'd guess it's because the americans know Shaun Maguire with an american accent from that sitcom he did and Meet the Spartans. So he does it in that accent to be more commercially viable.

He's called Krod becuse (in the UK at least) there's an accent over the 'O' to make a pun on 'Crud' which means 'a bit rubbish' in england.

The only sitcom I know him from, which actually played over here on the same night as this (which made me realise who he was), had him playing a posh British accent.

Off Centre? I LOVED THAT SHOW. Maybe even Eve?

Um...Kevin Hart? Anyone else notice he is also American? Why just hate on Sean? And I fail to see the big deal.

"That was supposed to be my power up pack, I'm Scott Malkanson, and I have diabetes."

The producers requested it.

I wondered if it was a bit of a joke because whenever you see American versions of medieval things they always have American accents which somehow doesn't seem right...although why people think they would talk with a clear English accent in medieval times is beyond me too lol

In an interview in the British trade mag 'The Stage' in the week of June 10 2009, Sean says that he played Krod with a British accent and then with an American accent and it was generally agreed that the American accent was more in keeping with the stereotype romantic hero being lampooned. To be honest I thought Sean showed more subltety than I'd expected whilst the generally versatile Matt Lucas was just plain over the top. Nice comic turn from Roger Allam, albeit too brief whilst India is a real find.

Can I just advise the American polulation that we don't have a BRITISH accent...Great Britain is made up of four nations..England,Scotland,Wales and Norhtern Ireland so we from Britain either have a regional English,Scottish,Welsh or Northern Irish accent..NOT a 'British' accent...cheers old chaps and chin chin

reply

Hey euronick I'm sure you're well aware America has regional accents as well. There is no "American accent" either.

reply

you've kind of missed the point. they are different countries and those countries have different regional accents within them. so a british accent could be 4 different things. an american accent can't because it's only one country.

I'm only quoting Sean Maguire, old bean. Toodle pip.

I wasn't critisizing you personally..just the general notion that Americans think we have a 'British' accent..what what what..chocks away

reply

Yep....this was confirmed in a 20 minute interview (Sean and Matt goofing around and filling in some of the blanks) shown on BBC2's interactive channel immediately following airing of the last episode in the UK. Sean played Krod both ways because the English producers wanted an English accent and the American producers wanted an American accent. He went on to say that, strangely enough, the English accent didn't work so well and in the end an English actor using an American accent appeased everyone.

I personally LOVE the way Krod looks and sounds so IMHO they definitely made the right decision.

EK, EK, all day, every day!

reply

This was what I was thinking. I'm American and wondered about this, too. Then I thought...Dick Van Dyke, Kevin Costner... lousy British accents. They're either making fun of Americans or Americans in British shows.

Doesn't matter, love the joke either way. Love the show all the way!

"Why can't we all just get along?"

reply

Its a a joke at the expense of Hollywood versions of Robin Hood etc where the star (eg Kevin Costner) plays the English hero without any attempt at an English accent! We English have a peculiar sense of humour sometimes!

reply

I'd just like to point out that Krod has an American accent because the character is AMERICAN! I don't think they actually said where he is from, but what is said in the first episode about his father and home tells us he's from America.

Also, if you're going to market a show in multiple countries, particularly the UK and US, you'd be stupid not to put up your frontman as the majority know him. In the UK, we've known him with different accents (and actually, the majority seem to think he's Irish because of his part on Eastenders), whereas in the US - by far the larger audience - you know him with an American accent.

Plus the previous comments are right - the whole show is a parody on stories like Robin Hood. Such stories - British in origin - are usually portrayed either with an American putting on a rubbish British accent, or it's just done with American accents with no acknowledgement of the inaccuracies. Why would there be an American freedom fighter in the British woods in 1300-and-something? There wouldn't. It's funny. Deal with it!

reply

Actually I think of him with his natural accent (or close to it because I haven't heard him talk when not acting) because I remember him from one of my favorite sitcoms (Off Centre).

I think it's kind of a stab at the fantasy movies form the 80's that tended to have almost all English cast members aside from the lead, who would usually be an American actor.
