Why is Jon in the witness protection program?

I don't remember if they covered this in season 1. Just curious.

I don't believe they stated exactly why in the first season. But on "Jon He Does It" he says he witnessed a mob hit.

He witnessed a murder _I think_ and that it why the Russian hitman is after him
