It just feels comparatively cheap to the others in every way

I know many miss Will and Elizabeth but there are even bigger fundamental issues here and the lack of Gore Verbinski's pomp and vision makes this film feel really simple and empty when immediately viewed after the others.. The cinematography and the environments/settings don't measure up, Depp doesn't look like he's giving half the effort as he previously did, and they absolutely ruined Barbossa. Cruz's character is not remotely compelling or dangerous. The plot seems aimless for much of the movie, like you could leave for a quick dinner partway through and come back without missing much development. Everything about this seems like a pale imitation, so it's hard to believe that writers Elliott and Rossio were involved.

I think you basically summed up what's wrong with the film. Still a few good moments but nowhere near as good as the first three.

I watched it the other night. I think you're partially right, it does look like a TV sequel to the theatrical first three films. For one thing, Jack looks like he's wearing a Jack costume the whole time...he's also too..clean looking, and the story does just drag on with the stunt sequences more out of duty than being necessary.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.
