I wonder if circumstance hurt this film more than anything?

Reading the history on this movie has me wondering - if the Trevon Martin case & the Batman theater shooting didn't happen, how much better would this film have done? Did 'bad timing' cost them a lot of ticket sales?

Me & my family laughed our a*ses off watching this & we liked the "Dodgeball" style comedy combined with the sci-fi story line. I guess it appealed to me most of all because it was like the 80's Vacation movies, it made fun of all the suburban cliches. For some odd reason, all the product placement didn't bother me & it seemed like it added to it because, here in Buffalo, we don't have Costco, but we do have BJ's Wholesale Club & we shop there so it was funny anyway. I guess, if an alien invasion really did happen this way, I could almost see myself & the other working class stiffs I know from my neighborhood acting a little like they did in the movie. No one would believe you & it would turn out the same.
