Ikari's symbolic role (spoilers)

I kind of thought Ikari was an angel of death of sorts, considering both of his close friends in the film died/killed themselves. Especially since he could see Clara and Pol at the end when no one else could. He left because his work was done, perhaps. Anyone else think that might have been the implication?
