Isn't this just a rip-off?

Of the 'Doyle' character from the tv series "Angel"?

He's a private detective named Doyle who has a similar look and a similar accent.

I can't believe CBC greenlit this.

If this was supposed to be a joke, it wasn't a very funny one. If you were serious, what have you been drinking? Other than the name, this Doyle have absolutely nothing to do with Angel's Doyle - and of course the two shows have nothing to do with each other, either!

Corto, I totally agree.

By the way, I'm currently developing a series with the CBC about a private investigator with a moustache who wears Hawaiian t-shirts. We're calling it "Republic of Magnum".

Well, there's that, but I feel it's got more in common with James Garner's "The Rockford Files", both inspirations of which the show's website acknowledges.

I agree 100% empath69 :)

I wonder if Jake hides a gun in the cookie jar too like Jim Rockford?

Love your tag by the way. George Carlin was one of most favourite comedians, may he rest in peace.

Sounds like I need to check out The Rockford Files. I own on DVD and have watched all the seasons of Magnum PI and have watched every episode thus far of Republic of Doyle ... but I really don't see much of a comparison between the two shows other than both are PI's on "islands". This has more in common with Simon & Simon .. or heck even now that I think of it Hardcastle & McCormmick. Maybe all they took from Magnum was just that there was a good balance of outdoor and indoor scenes? I don't know. Still, fantastic shows.

Another good canadian detective show to check out... Endgame. It's currently airing on Hulu and originally aired on Canadian channel Showcase. Looks like thanks to the awards it got and the feedback by Hulu users that there is a good chance we'll get another season of that. The main star, Shawn Doyle, played the guy that was released from prison and became a mufti-millionaire after winning a wrongful conviction suit for 2 episodes. He did such a good job on ROD that I didn't even recognize him in the first episode he appeared in.

Not sure if it was a cookie Jar exactly, but I believe the Season 2 established he does have a Gun hidden somewhere in Mal and Rose's Kitchen

That "Doyle" was a vampire or something like that.

"similar accent"?
Yes b'y. What are ya, cracked?

Jeez, missus; yer t'ick as two short planks! ;)

Angel's Doyle was a demon who was in the host of a fallen Irishman. We Newfoundlanders would do well to remember where the bulk of our ancestry comes from - Irish settlers - so THAT matter of 'similar accent' isn't so far out to sea. (sorry for the pun)

Mind you, given the way that Newfoundland was settled - a miscellany of small fishing villages founded by sea into any remotely hospitable bay, cove or similar safe harbour, and then those 'outports' would only ever communicate with the outside world via boat voyage - there is a vast assortment of wildly varying accents within Newfoundland itself, so it's really lucky to find easy commonality between 'Mother Ireland' and any given divergent 'Newfie accent'.

So you're both right AND wrong; on a broad level they ARE similar, but any amount of scrutiny would find discrepancies between A's Doyle and ANY of the diverse-ish characters from RoD.
