Things I Learned

Spoilers, Spoilers, Spoilers

When Special Forces Troops tell you to stay in your home because of imminent danger, you don't.

You can crawl from one home to the next through the attic (row houses) in the UK because there are no brick or cement walls blocking you way. Just great if you have a burglar, serial killer or rapist living next door.

With wall to wall Special Forces outside your home and you hear someone in your attic you go and investigate armed with just a kitchen knife rather than calling for help right outside your front door, knowing full well it's probably terrorists.

You see a sub machine gun laying in your backyard and just leave it there, opting instead, just to use a poker or kitchen knife for self defense.

Special Forces in the UK don't have night vision or infrared equipment, they just use regular flashlights.

UK Special Forces shoot anything that moves.

The most stupid and annoying woman in the whole of the UK kills the monster with said poker, where the best, most highly trained Special Forces can't.

Oh, and if your moms separated from your dad, she can't have boyfriends.

There do exist some legit complaints you can make about this movie, but some of these aren't really sensible.

"With wall to wall Special Forces outside your home and you hear someone in your attic you go and investigate armed with just a kitchen knife rather than calling for help right outside your front door, knowing full well it's probably terrorists."

It wasn't terrorists? And do you not remember that anytime they went near the windows or doors, that the troops took aim at them and told them to stay inside? They felt threatened.

"UK Special Forces shoot anything that moves."

Their mission was to kill the monster and keep any witnesses quiet, so they did shoot anything that moves that's not instantly identifiable as a fellow troop. The only people that were supposed to be outside were troops.

"The most stupid and annoying woman in the whole of the UK kills the monster with said poker, where the best, most highly trained Special Forces can't."

How is she stupid and annoying? Seriously, what is your problem with her character? She messed up her life and lost her daughter and then wanted her back at any cost. Would you have preferred a comical badass like Bruce Campbell, or is any character whose emotions resemble that of a real person in such a situation immediately deemed "stupid or annoying?" I know a lot of people want lots of blood and guts and badassery in their zombie movies, and it seems like whenever the main characters aren't straight out of Zombieland or Army of Darkness or armed to the teeth or emotionless, that there's a huge backlash. It's one thing to have wanted a different kind of protagonist, but it's another altogether to deem a character not to your liking as "stupid and annoying" - especially when that character's actions are completely reasonable.

And I also don't see a problem with her killing the monster when the Special Forces couldn't. You're making it seem like the troops were just stumbling all over the place firing bullets into the ground while the creature waltzed past them and then she stabbed it through the heart with the poker and raised her prize toward the sky triumphantly. They didn't know where it was so of course they weren't able to kill it, and she only barely was able to kill it.

"Oh, and if your moms separated from your dad, she can't have boyfriends."

I don't know if your parents were divorced or if they were, if you felt that one parent had just let you go seemingly without caring, or if you know anybody like that - but her reaction toward her mom was completely within reason for a child of divorce who felt that a parent had outright abandoned her. She was a teenager looking for any excuse to not stay with her Mom. I mean I don't know if you're actually criticizing the script here or not or just poking fun at the characters, but the rest of your post suggests you take lots of problems with the script, and there's nothing wrong with that part.

and as far as everyone knew, via the TV, it was terrorists, until that annoying woman overheard the wounded soldiers conversation on the radio inside the house after they rescued him!

The movie made the soldiers stumbling idiots.
They even shot people knowing that they weren't the monster. lol.
No night vision goggles etc. just flashlights. duh!

Teenagers are selfish, it's all about them!
Just think back if you're an adult.

The whole script was horrible!

reply

The soldiers were deliberately murdering civlilians in order to leave no witnesses. How could you possibly have not noticed that?

reply

Exactly. And the TV report doesn't mention terrorists. It's Kieran who decides it's terrorists. Beth doesn't really believe him, since she says Mr Sharma was a Hindu not a Muslim!

You clearly missed the bit when her daughter tells her she's a few hours early! If her daughter had arrived on time then Kieran would have been long gone. Don't you just love it when people criticise films they haven't watched properly? She's not a nasty, horrid woman at all. She's messed up her marriage, just like many, many other people. She is allowed to have a sex life.

reply

I still think it's a little messed up to be having a one night (morning?) stand on the day your estranged daughter comes to see you.

You know what would suck? If you risked going out in the open, and when you got the gun and it was out of ammo

reply

While I did think that too, I suspect they were more concerned with getting the soldier inside as soon as possible.

reply

I have to agree. She was kind of nasty! Knowing her daughter was coming home for christmas she was riding the dude like there was no tomorrow! WTH kind of woman was this? Nice boobs though...

How do you like your brandy, sir?

"Spoilers, Spoilers, Spoilers"

Replies, replies, replies. ;-)

Okay, IMDb has a policy regarding spoilers, but this film could perhaps be summed up as "stuff happened, but did anybody care?".

"When Special Forces Troops tell you to stay in your home because of imminent danger, you don't." - of course not, her one thought was to get her daughter. Plus, if everybody stayed put it would have been a kinda boring film.

"You can crawl from one home to the next through the attic (row houses) in the UK because there are no brick or cement walls blocking you way." - gee, now what d'you suppose the big ol' hammer-thing in the hallway was from? Why d'you suppose the characters kept glancing up? The bloke used the hammer to smash through the pathetically weak brick wall. If you have the DVD, freeze-frame as they are crawling between the houses, you'll see it quite clearly.

"With wall to wall Special Forces outside your home and you hear someone in your attic you go and investigate armed with just a kitchen knife rather than calling for help right outside your front door," - I sure as hell wouldn't go and investigate without a Really Big Gun in my hands. But given the attitude of the Special Forces here, I wouldn't call them either.

"You see a sub machine gun laying in your backyard and just leave it there," - well, yeah. I noticed that. Seemed a bit idiotic.

"Special Forces in the UK don't have night vision or infrared equipment, they just use regular flashlights." - cutbacks, dear boy. We just don't have the budget these days. ;-)

"UK Special Forces shoot anything that moves." - not quite. They wanted to contain the situation and make their dirty secret go away. But when stupid and annoying people keep getting in the way, they become a liability. It is fine to say "terrorists", but anybody who can point to the real truth...needs to be silenced.
Though killing the other mouthy teenage girl was bordering on gratuitous; and that implies the protagonist teenage girl is going to get a bullet in the head too, as said monster was slain right in front of her. Liability.

"The most stupid and annoying woman in the whole of the UK kills the monster" - good, so she actually had a greater purpose in this film than to make me want to climb into the telly and shoot her myself.

"Oh, and if your moms separated from your dad, she can't have boyfriends." - not when said mother is supposed to be trying to get back together with dad.

I'm overthinking this. It was a naff film.
