I think Will is far too quirky and wrapped up in his own world to know, let alone care about, this kind of cultural thing.
shareThat may have been a cultural cue 10 years ago but it no longer applies to current culture. I have multiple straight male friends with their left ears pierced, as well as right ears. At least in my circle of friends (20-something college graduates) it no longer signifies anything.

And to comment on the OP, I haven't heard that since I was like...5? And even then, it was something my father said, and he's never been "current" with the trends and whatnot. I think it's safe to say that no one cares what ear is pierced anymore
