Deserves a way better score.

I really don't understand why there's so much hate for The FP. There is absolutely no way a movie like Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter deserves a higher rating.

I myself enjoy plenty of b-movie crap, but realize that even when a Troma movie or a $3 budget Sasquatch movie is fun--it really isn't a good movie. The FP is not some crappily made b-movie. It is a very well done movie with a bizarre premise. It actually reminds me a lot of some of the theme episodes of the tv show Community (one of my favorite shows, btw). The most obvious example would be the Foosball episode. Take a ridiculous premise, but play it off deadly serious, and voila, great comedy.

It shocks me that there are people that seem to completely miss the joke. My guess is that they just watched the trailer and then downvoted the movie. And even then, I'm amazed that there is a question of whether the movie is actually trying to be completely serious. People really are so daft that they think the writers wrote "I challenge you to a Beat Off" without realizing the double meaning?

Anyway, I love the movie. As the creators are happy to admit, the movie really is basically Rocky meets Double Dragon (with Dance Dance Revolution, of course), and it is obvious that the creators put a lot of work into crafting the project into their vision. Definitely not a "toss together a script in a weekend and then film it in a week" type of movie. I very much look forward to The FP 2.

You really can't entertain the possibility that we get it and still hate it? You can't make a bad movie on purpose. That you can watch Community and this and think they both are striving for the same thing, never mind achieving it in the same way, is as daft as you think we are for not getting this supposed joke.

Reading comprehension is a valuable skill. Not once did I say anything of the sort that I can't believe there are people out there that just don't like the movie. There are people with bad taste everywhere. But judging by posts other people have made, yes, there are plenty of people who just plain don't understand the movie. If you have to ask if the writers didn't understand the double entendre they made with the "I challenge you to a Beat Off" then you didn't understand the movie. If you watch the movie and still seriously question whether the movie is supposed to be completely serious--you didn't understand the movie.

And if you yourself find it too hard to process that Community's theme episodes employ the same tactic as used in The FP, then I'm not sure whether you just plain missed the humor borne out of the ridiculous situation of the KFC Winnebago Space Simulator or the organized crime style chicken fingers episode, or the (blatantly obvious comparison) uber serious Foosball "fight". Would it really seem that out of place on Community if they had an episode where they had a double serious gang-style fight going on, but when they battled, it was using Dance Dance Revolution?

reply

Your implication is that if you don't laugh, you don't get it.

And that is the inherent problem with this sort of movie. It's bad on purpose and so can hide behind that when it is challenged on anything.

And it would seem out of place on Community because Community had already established its world and its characters before delving into its "theme episodes" and wouldn't sacrifice either for this kind of nonsense. Nor would it use a conceit as wildly dated as a dancing game.

But you think someone saying "beat off" is both hilarious and clever. So I'm not sure why I'm bothering.

reply

Would you say Black Dynamite is a bad movie because it's "bad on purpose?"

reply

Seems like you answered your own question.

reply

Based on your passive response I'm guessing you haven't seen the movie.

reply

No, if you don't laugh, ok, it's not your style. If you SERIOUSLY can't tell that the writers understand what they just wrote (such as with the Beat Off line) then you don't get it. Those who can't tell if something is a joke when the lines are said in a straight manner don't get it. I really don't know how you keep missing my point over and over again. There are specific posts on this message board and on the youtube trailer where the authors are (non jokingly) questioning if the movie is supposed to 100% serious and the writers just didn't realize the double entendres in the dialogue. If they really can't tell--then they don't get it. 100% non-debatable fact. This is not a matter of whether they found it funny or not.

I stand corrected about Community. They would never use something as dated as DDR. Or clay animation christmas movies. Or 8-bit nintendo games. Or spaghetti westerns. I don't really get the argument about how Community already established its characters and world before doing the theme episodes. What does that have to do with whether or not having an FP style episode would be out of place? And of course the theme episodes are what Harmon really wanted to toss in anyway. Once given a chance to flex his creative muscles, he went all in. Had the first batch of episodes, trying to be pretty straight forward to get a hold in the network tv world. Then NBC ordered additional episodes for the first season, and the first ones he made were the chicken wings mob episode, and Modern Warfare.

And don't try to pretend like the Beat Off line is a huge part of the movie, or that I have raved about how hilarious the line is. It is said precisely 1 time in the whole movie, and I brought the line up specifically because that exact line was mentioned by people who seemed to have missed the point of the entire movie (and I would be willing to bet that they didn't actually watch the whole movie, and instead just watched the trailer and then downvoted it on IMDB--my original point restated).

Ok. Next time I'll refrain from responding to the words you've typed and skip what you really must have meant by them.

reply

Oh, you're already doing a pretty good job of disregarding what I typed and instead trying to create your own meanings.

Question: Have you actually watched the whole movie?

reply

I think the guys who made this movie did an excellent job if they trick people into thinking its serious. That is good *beep* film making and puts the joke on the viewer for taking the movie far to seriously. There is no denying that this movie was very well made and if people don't understand the underlying joke, than they are missing out.

reply

To the OP,

Do you want this film to have a higher score or do you want more people to know about this film? The only way you're ever going to get word out on this film is if you rate it a 1. Threads like this are extremely counterproductive to your aims not only because they reinforce the film's middling rating, but also because The FP is, in fact, a terrible film. However, it's so terrible that it's good.

reply

I get your point exactly. It becomes a circular argument, the bad movie is SUPPOSED to be bad, so if you think it's bad, then it's good...get it? No, well you're taking it too seriously! :P

The movie runtime of 82 minutes shows how far they can stretch this Beat Beat Revelation dance-off concept, which probably could have been cut down to a 25 minute short.

reply

I thought you were going to cut down this movies musical "score". At which point i was going to be like "are you kidding me, the score is perfect".
