Wasn't this supposed to be anime?
I thought it was, but no - it's just crappy american animation. It pretty much ruined it for me.

I know what you mean; it took me quite a while to get into the story thanks to the very sub-par quality of the animation. It seemed like they didn't really bother to try and make it special.
Although it can be argued that, since the BF panels within the novel were supposed to show a lower quality of art reproduction to depict a cheap comic within the actual comic itsel, the sub-par animation is offhandedly intentional.
But that's a stretch...
If you disagree with something, attack the argument , never the person .
You silly twats... anime is the best kind of animation there is. The Simpsons? Anime. Family Guy? Anime. Well, not really... but very close to it, since they're all animated in Korea. The point here is that every animated show drawn in America is *beep* The ANIMATION is aweful. Anime is not defined by how the characters look, but wether it's animated in JAPAN! *beep* idiots.

Sangman Park? Yongwoon Cho? Yah, the credits are loaded with names that just scream "crappy American cartoon". Besides, the style this was drawn in bore as much resemblance to that of Dave Gibbons as the freakin' Moomins look like every single panel was drawn by Tove Jansson herself. And that really isn't a compliment.
Silly little bugger.

Tales of the Black Freighter was animated in Korea.
And the style is a reflection of 1980s comic book art...since Tales of the Black Freighter is a comic book in alternate 1985...which should be obvious to anyone with a brain.
I am a huge fan of anime, but I don't think that's the right style for Tales of the Black Freighter. It was perfect how it was.
