3/10. Here's why:

Greg Kinnear's performance and the chemistry between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are what save THE LAST SONG... and Cyrus' performance is what almost ruins it. No, I'm not a hater. Actually, the reason why I didn't see this movie when it came out was that I had a crush on her and didn't feel like paying money to watch another guy kiss her. It's not that she doesn't try; she just doesn't seem to know what she's doing. In a lot of scenes it feels like she's guessing which face she should make and a couple of times she makes the wrong one. She never displays real emotions. See? That's why an actor shouldn't ask someone to write a movie for them: It's not challenging enough. Speaking of that, I could tell that the script was a request. Even by the low standars of Nicholas Sparks' works, this one has a half-baked plot. There's not a main conflict; just a bunch of problems that appear and dissapear every couple of minutes. It feels like watching the entire season of a TV series. I could forgive that if at least there was a message. Sparks' stories have very obvious messages but they're usually harmless. This time, there can't be a message, because there's not an actual point. Is this movie about RONNIE and her dad reconciling? No, because he dies. I mean, there are movies where 2 people make up before one of them dies but the audience knows from the start who's dying. That way, we don't waste so much time watching one of them slowly realize that they could get along with the other. No. We have to know about that because, that way, they make up in a more meaningful way. They can have deep conversations and the one dying can pass on life lessons, but instead, the dad focuses on making sure RONNIE's new relationship is going well (and approriate). That's another issue. You can't have a story about a girl and her father with a broken relationship and about that girl falling in love. It comes off as her falling in love because she has daddy issues. OK, maybe I'm exagerating, but you have to agree that it doesn't fit with the rest. The movie ended and I didn't know what to take from it because too many unrelated things happened. By the way, it was nice that the dad didn't go to the police and tell them that SCOTT had caused the fire because he got that it was an accident and they would arrest him and ruin his young life. Ummm... What about MARCUS? He's still out there doing bad things. There's a line between sweet and cheesy, and this movie crosses it when the dad's ghost (apparently) shines a light in the church at his funeral.
