missing plot point

Did I miss what Kalmen did to screw up the approval of the new proposed dealership?

reply

He had sex with the college-bound daughter of girlfriend Mary Louise Parker. I believe that Parker's husband (a powerful figure with ties to city government) was on the very board that would approve zoning in that neighborhood.

Or something to that effect.

Even if this is a missing plot point, its one I'm willing to forgive.

not the husband/father--they were divorced
it was MLP's character's FATHER who was on the board of BMW--
that is whyDouglass was dating her to start with from what his daughter--Jenna Fisher's character--said in the park at the beginning of the movie

he was dating/screwing her to get her to get her father to go to bat for him--Douglass/Ben apparently had owned many, many BMW dealerships in the NY area in several states and as presented in the film did illegal things at his dealerships to steal money from BMW and customers

he did not go to jail--basically bought his way out--
and wanted to get back into being a dealer
had a great site but needed the franchise ok--
had to have someone with enough clout to make all his past bad acts go away

MLP's father made it happen and Douglass had the OK for the new dealership and then the daughter told the mother what she and Douglass did and the dealership got cancelled...

All of which doesn't explain why he is seen driving a brand new Mercedes!! Especially with his financial difficulties, it is difficult to see why he moved out of his apartment and begged all his friends and family for money before selling the car and getting some quick liquid cash. He's a car salesman, shouldn't be difficult for him to make a good $40-50 000 on a car like that!

NYC public transport is pretty good...

Do you often reply to questions by just making up your own answers? That's not very nice!

reply

explain what you think I "made up" about what I wrote--
that is what I inferred from conversations between the characters...

and I would think the car was a leased one--definitely not bought--and it might have even been car of MLP that he borrowed for the trip to college...
