Nick Nolte heartbreaking scene

This movie is decent at best. But that scene is definitely oscar worthy. To see a completely broken man drunk out of his mind feeling like he was a failure to his kids is just sad and depressing. You can't help but feel for the man. It moved me to the core. It brought me to tears.

And to see the son finally accepting him in such a poignant/beautiful moment.

Outstanding acting by Nick Nolte.

Agreed Just watched the scene now and it was brilliantly done. It was like Tom Hardy had to see his dad was screwed up like him before be could start to forgive him. Truly touching.

I was impressed with most of the Nolte scenes, really. My favourite was the one near the slot machine.

'Tommy... I'm really trying here.'

This is what war does to men..... and to families.

Finally Tommy realised what had broken his father and had turned him into an alcoholic.... as he himself had first hand knowledge - which he also carried around in himself. The horrors seen and experienced in wars comes home with the men, permeating and destroying the wife and the kids and any chance of normality. Long term counselling should be mandatory for years if needed.
The Nick Nolte scene after he fell off the wagon which he had worked for years on, to be booze free, was heart-breaking..... some of the best footage I have ever seen. It had me crying..... the pain that Pop carried deep inside, with no one to help him deal with it - makes a huge statement about returned veterans. The personal costs these men pay is off the charts.

When he tossed the coins in his dad's face ... ugh!

The moment he sees his granddaughters was beautiful. Nolte captured the sudden surprise, relief and anguish powerfully.
