Why does Tommy return home?

Why does Tommy show up at his dad's house at the start of the film? It doesn't appear to be to ask him for help training for Sparta since Tommy doesn't appear to learn about it until later (and waits even later than that to ask).

Is it to tell Paddy that his wife died? That doesn't seem like something Tommy believes his father is entitled to know.
