Great acting, horrible script !

Nolte, Hardy, Edgerton - all great actors with great performances, but the story was so terribly clichéd that I lost all interest in the characters - apart from the fact that you knew the outcome after the first 15 minutes. All the details added later on did not change the expected ending.

Since a movie is mainly a narrative, the story / plot is the basic element on which my evaluation of a good movie is based; acting, cinematography, music, editing etc. can turn a good movie into an excellent one. Unfortunately, this was not the case here, because the foundation was (figuratively speaking) rotten and plain silly.

My (personal) problem is the glorification of violence - even if it is disguised as "sport". But my problems with the script would have been the same even if the two brothers played golf.

If you enjoyed the movie and had a good time - good for you. It's just my humble opinion.

That was sport. Mma is a totally legitimate sport and is more popular than boxing these days, all of the fights were very realistic. Bones get broken, people are choked unconscious and pounded on until the referee pulls you off. People are beaten for ages before pulling off a comeback it's all real

I don't think the OP was questioning the authenticity of the fight scenes.

I actually thought the script was pretty good. Most genre movies have predictable endings. I'm not overly concerned by this. What interests me is how we get there. Thematically the film's about sibling rivalry and two sons competing for the lost love of their father. It is not simply about winning, something the final shot indicates strongly with the two brothers finally together. There is very little emphasis on the prize which is merely the MacGuffin. In Rocky, victory signifies personal achievement yet here what matters is the reconciliation of the brothers. I thought MMA was a great way to visualise the conflict and expose the emotions that the brothers obviously struggle with. For such characters we are unlikely to have crackling dialogue exchanges for their inability to communicate is part of the struggle. Of course the performances matter and I thought Nick Nolte was superb and ably supported. In my humble opinion well structured script and great performances.
