Biggest flaw: unlikable geeky male 'protagonist'

I just watched the movie and I thought the exact same thing!

The casting of this terribly ugly, unlikeable actor destroyed the movie. They should have cast an actor who would be believable as nerdy, but who is still a little cute and likable (like Michael Angarano.)

The casting of that horrible lead actor is why this movie did so poorly at the box office.

Kim Cattrall's scenes were the only good thing in this movie.

You're absolutely right! how different would this movie had been if the male lead had been as cute and awkward as Michael Angarano

reply

btw I didn't mean to say that awkward as Michael Angarano is awkward just that he could do awkward lol

The irony here is that this guy is almost *certainly* better looking than anyone posting in this thread and almost certainly has far more charisma as well.

Just click on the actor link and look at his profile. he's a good looking guy, as usual.

So for those saying "why didnt they cast a guy that was "a little cute" but still nerdy"... Well they did; maybe he just doesnt quite live up to the usual standards of perfection that IMDB forum posters demand... LOL!

Personally, I think that the problem with most movies is that the movie view of "ugly" is a kid like this (who is in reality, tall and thin and good looking) and the movie view of "old and washed up and over the hill" is a gorgeous woman like Kim Catral, both of whom are far far above average looking (and hence are being paid to act)

I have to disagree with you. I found him actually difficult to look at, much less imagine him being a sexual being with whom Monica could actually have a roll in the hay.
I LIKE odd looking character actors, but this dude was straight up ugly.

He needs some dental work if he has any notion of having a career in film. He's a way less attractive Napoleon Dynamite imho.

I thought the biggest flaw in this film was a total lack of Kim Cattrel nudity. Seriously, a movie about a porn star, and not even a single nipple shot. un-f'ing-believable.

You took the keys right out of my keyboard! I logged on this board just to make the exact same comment you did about the protagonist being unlikable and almost gross to look at because there's nothing appealing about him physically or otherwise. The scene in which Kim Cattrall kisses him was gross to watch and believe me I was glad when the sex was insinuated as oppose to...

reply

Take a look at the director and it may give you an indication as why the kid was chosen.

Yeah, because 17 year olds who obsess over 49 year old porno actresses, have no girlfriend, no dates, and masturbate nightly to VHS's from 1978 also have to be adorable in such an inscrutable way as to make it believable that they can be attractive to the opposite sex while still being awkward virgins. Hollywood has given it to you people 'both ways' for so long that you've come to expect a formula that simply does not exist in reality. I thought the lead actor was very convincing. Sure he was gawky and ugly, but that would be the look of someone who has no life experience and treks out from Washington to Indiana to sell a 1970 hot dog truck and to meet a porn star of yesteryear. I saw a lot of myself in Tobe. I too have a fascination with 70's porn. And yes, I have at least 2 favorite female adult stars that I would have liked to have met in person. And while I was never as geeky or physically unattractive as Tobe I also never drove across the country to see a porn star pole dance. Nor have I peeped on a girl my age and left a signed note commending her for masturbating. I felt Tobe looked the part of someone who did as awkward things as he did, and I commend the casting director and Ancho Bay for trying to be as realistic with this material as possible.

OMG I usually hate the geeky protagonists that everyone seems to think are so sweet, but this guy didn't annoy me once!! Really liked him and enjoyed the movie!

reply

He is so ugly I could barely stand to look at him - and those teeth - how does anyone get teeth like that?

reply

I wonder if it's his acting rather than his looks. The first third of the film his acting was problematic and I kept thinking how a different actor would have made this film a bigger success but I gradually got used to him and it all started to make sense, even his relationship with that particular girl at the end. They looked good and believable together.

"Lol OMG the protagonist is an awful actor and totally unlikable because he isn't SUPER HOT!1!!1!1 Ugly people are NEVER good actors and shouldn't be allowed in movies because they are UGLY. The audacity, choosing an ugly actor for your movie, ridiculous!"

Yep, pretty much sums up the average moviegoer.
