The problem with Asia Carrera

Boy, I walked away from this with some pretty negative thoughts on Asia Carrera. First of all, the constant bragging about her intelligence, and her grades, and her Mensa membership was over the top. This is a woman who has been trying - since childhood - to prove to the world (and to herself) that she has value. It struck me as really sad that she's continuing in this effort. She felt the need to explain how she is Asia the intellect, Asia the beautiful sex symbol, Asia the groundbreaking porn star, Asia the super mom. She said her daughter is super smart; and we get to see her working out/running, and basically being the perfect woman. But nothing she said felt genuine. It felt like a big phony act, about as sincere and convincing as her on-film orgasms.

For someone who is so smart, you have to wonder how it is that she never made a good decision in her whole life. She spent an eternity telling us how successful she was, and how much money she made, and how she made hundreds of dollars an hour signing autographs, yada yada yada. Then when her husband died she said she had nothing. Absolute zero. A lot of porn stars leave the business broke, but Asia Carrera wasn't your average porn star. She was an A-lister; she was a certified genius, and she was in the porn business for 16 years. How the hell did she not save something or invest something somewhere in those 16 years? According to her, if not for her generous fans donating money, she would have ended up homeless. C'mon. Either she's not as smart as she's telling us, or the plea for cash was a scam.

She told us in great detail how she learned EVERYTHING she could about making a porno and how she could do any job on the set because she learned everything. In fact, she was the only person in the documentary to cite her imdb page, claiming that it proves how she did every possible job on the set. I checked her imdb page, and her story doesn't check out. In 1997, she directed and wrote 6 porn movies. That's it. She was in the porn industry for 16 years and starred in 280 movies. For approximately 2% of those movies, she had a hand in writing and directing over a period of 12 months. Outside of 1997, there's nothing. There are no credits for lighting, sound, special effects, grip work, etc. It looks like she experimented in writing/directing for a 12-month period and that was it. Yet another example of her making herself out to be more than she is.

In the final minutes of the documentary, she states how the porn industry was so great to her (despite leaving her penniless) and how she has no regrets (despite having to hide out and live as a hermit in a tiny Utah town where she is confronted by strangers about her past). She said she is doing great and life is wonderful. Then right before the closing credits, we learn that the woman with the perfect life is battling alcoholism. Oh, and apparently food addiction as well since she's gained 40 lbs in the two years since quitting porn.

They should've just left her out of the documentary. Nothing she said was based in reality and thus none of it had any relevance. Sad story. Fortunately, she can always rely on her loyal fans to bail her out.

Seems pretty normal, try asking a normal woman about her career, finances, or personal life. She'll evade, exaggerate, lie-- it's BS several feet deep.

reply

That's not my experience.

reply

Thanks for saying that.

In the epilogue they point out she's a recovering alcoholic, most likely it stems from her lack of self confidence which would also explain her need to over compensate when talking about things and also her bad financial state.

As for imdb, I won't deny that I use it frequently as a resource myself but at the same time I know that it's not really reliable. Things are commonly omitted or just flat out wrong. I'm not saying she's not over selling herself but I do remember even back in the day always hearing how involved she was behind the scenes.

reply

i won't really blame her for trying to oversell herself, everybody wants to think himself worthy and everybody else is an idiot. its only human!

if a normal joe like you and me would want to be more worthy and smarter than the next idiot on the street. how else do you think a pornstar would feel? being told to suck whose dick, bend over and get poked everyday and comply with every instruction given to you and feeling constantly degraded on a daily basis, naturally you'll look at yourself and want to think that your best quality isn't your pussy or your *beep* right?

i actually feel bad for her after watching the flim, i'd have loved to think that they made it out good, with money in the bank, a husband and a supportive family. it seems however that most of them end up poor, regret what they've done and wished they lived a different life.

some of them actually had tough childhoods, that pornstar who got kicked out of her house by her dad and forced into prostitution? that's a tough, tough life to live!

so if asia carrera finds solace in the fact that she was smart when she was younger and could have been so much more, i say good for her!
who are we to judge, afterall we will never know what she'd be if she didn't enter porn. for all you know, she might really be smarter than everybody thinks she is!

I remember her saying in an interview that she wanted to be a musician when she was a kid but her parent told her no.

She didn't "brag" any more than anyone else. It's just that it's perfectly acceptable for a guy to brag about his athletic and sexual prowess (Randy West). It's perfectly acceptable for a woman to brag about how famous and "hot" she once was (platic-surgery disaster Houston). It's perfectly OK for a woman to brag about her "acting" and ability to fake orgasms (Tiffany Million). And anybody can brag about how much money they make (as any number of interviewees do). But for some reason it's not acceptable to brag about being smart--especially if you're female--because it makes dumber people feel bad I guess (whereas nobody apparently cares about the feelings of ugly, poor people who are terrible in bed).

Maybe she also wants to puncture the stereotype of the bimbo porn star. More power to here there.

I also appreciated she didn't blame porn for her hardship when it was obviously not to blame for things like the death of her husband and her subsequent financial difficulties. Why she didn't have any money saved is a good question, but again she wasn't exactly alone there among the interviewees.

Given some of the other braggarts, professional victims, Christian crusaders, and general dimwits, it's perplexing why anyone would single HER out as particularly obnoxious

reply

Yeah I think she is like most women who get into porn. Just as you say: trying to prove they have value. Asia Carrera is obviously highly intelligent, but she does not strike me as being any smarter than many women I went to university with. I am sure she was the smartest person in porn, but there are tons of attractive women out there with high IQs.

I still do not understand how someone who clearly earned millions of dollars over the course of her career could possible be broke.

reply

I don't feel like she was bragging about getting accepted into MENSA. I think she just wanted to let people know that she was highly intelligent. That being said there's a huge difference between being intelligent and having common sense, especially when it comes to every day decision-making.

Also, intelligence or common sense has nothing to do with alcoholism or drug addiction. From what I understand, her husband was killed in a car accident pretty soon after she gave birth to their child, so I can imagine how traumatizing that could be for anyone. I was glad to see that she had the courage to seek help when she realized she needed it.

(For the record, I'm not a "fan" of any particular porn star. I just found this documentary and the whole aspect of porn, especially when a porn career ends, very interesting. I do not look down on anyone who is in porn. It's something that I would not do, but to each his/her own. I just hope they are in it for the right reasons and are signed with reputable, honest companies and not those companies who use underage, drug/alcohol addicts, or people who have been forced into sex trafficking.)

I don't understand why the OP SAID Asia should have been left out of the film. Sounds like whether it was intended or not the camera captured some great footage. The title is concerned with the post porn lives of these people, and they should show it warts and all.

reply

After listening to her motormouth for 2 minutes she really set of my mental illness meter. I'm guessing she is bipolar, or perhaps has borderline personality disorder.

reply

Just because you get accepted in to Mensa doesn't mean you can take what you know and get a job with it.

reply

I guess the problem I have with her is that her whole life is seems to be predicated on lashing out against her parents or something. Perhaps mental illness. Evidence points to the fact that she was able to get a full-ride scholarship to Rutgers which means she never had to prostitute herself or strip. She's a nutburger and always has been.

I completely agree with Pupkin and had a good laugh at this post. Thanks.
