in the states?

Will Rajneeti be released anywhere in the united states? because I saw a poster for it in L.A.!

reply

It will be at Naz8 for sure, and probably most of the usual Los Angeles Hindi film theaters. I saw an advertisement for it yesterday at a Culver City theater where they were showing 'Kites' and 'Kites Re-mix'.

reply

It opens today in Tulsa. Another post-er on this board said only Indians would understand it. I hope s/he is wrong and I think I'll go even if I can't return to this board to see what all of you have to say. I am very political and, well, aren't politics kinda the same all over? What say you?

"Enjoy life. This is not a dress rehearsal."

reply

I hope politics in the US isn't like this. Another US watcher, saw it yesterday with about 10 other people in Doylestown, PA.

reply

Politics is also like this, sadly, in the USA as well. Look at the Kennedys gunned down, one after the other. Other charismatic American political leaders have been murdered as well, usually by their own “families”, so to speak. I’m not Indian, but I found this movie made a gripping statement about the problems and successes of democracy everywhere, not just in India.

You should go for it. There is nothing like that only an Indian would understand it.

reply

Went. Loved it. Intense. Talent abounds in that movie! Good story. Seemed implausible that the politicians themselves would do the killing, though. Wouldn't they send others?

reply

Hey great to see another Tulsan here! I went to see it here tonight and was really delighted.

I follow politics as well, and think the politics in this movie is both similar and very dissimilar to politics in the States. As a non-Indian, I think I found especially fascinating the very rich cultural distinctions. The whole "flavor" of the political culture was often very different from American political culture IMHO ...

Saw it last night in Dallas - Loved it and I'm not Indian. The subtitles are small but consistent and pretty good throughout. Go see it!

reply

If you were an Indian, you would appreciate it even more.

That's because it's one of the few movies in chaste Hindi, and with a very good plot that heavily parallels The Mahabharata and to an extent The Godfather.

As for it being a movie only Indians would understand, that would be true to an extent, if it weren't for the fact that politics is well understood and studied over the world, and, the movies includes subtitles :|

reply

I plan to go see the film again on the big screen so I can pay more attention to things other than the subtitles! But I'm looking into learning some Hindi and have begun with vocabulary already. Indian movies are fascinating, from Satyajit Ray to Rajneeti!

reply

Not all Indian movies are fascinating... I guess you'll find around 4-5 good titles a year ( out of a LOT, believe me )

Just make sure you select the better ones, no need to waste time on the rest of the utterly illogical, non entertaining, senseless crap :)

Rajneeti is a hark back to the times when Bollywood movies actually had a script of more than 5 pages, and I refer to the Golden Era of Hindi Cinema.

Considering the spate of popcorn flicks that flooded the BO in the last decade, I think we have some pretty good offerings like Wake Up Sid, A Wednesday, Taare Zameen Par, and some smatterings of regional cinema that unfortunately fail to attract commercial investment.

Oh well, just ignore my ranting and get to watching movies you might love.

PS: I hope you don't end up wanting to watch Kites after this :P Cos you'll be disappointed :)

reply

It is interesting that Kites has come to "regular" American theaters in its shortened form. I have not seen it yet either the Indian or American versions. I saw a bit of it at my South Asian grocery, though.... Not in a hurry to watch it!

Rajneeti deserves another watching in a real theater, and I will buy a copy of it to watch again at home. I did like Wake Up Sid, and Three Idiots. But there are some amazingly dreadful films with huge "Bollywood" stars that I won't mention here. I will check out the other two titles you said were pretty good. Any others that you think are must-see movies?

reply

i'm not sure Kites actually did come to American theaters in shortened form.

From what I read, that form actually only played in limited release in fewer theaters than picked up the full length version for NRI audiences.

Harichandrachi Factory is a recent must see if you like Indian movies. IMHO.

reply

Harichandrachi Factory is one I already had bookmarked to find! I have seen several of the other titles people have been listing - Thanks! And both versions of Kites are or were here in the Dallas area. I may rent the Hindi version later. I still plan to go see Rajneeti again next weekend. Action scenes are lots better on a big screen. Although I went to an American film yesterday, and watching the big-screen hero and heroine kiss repeatedly was yucky! I'm now used to very minimal kissing or almost-sex from the Indian films, and actually prefer them now!

reply

Harischandrachi Factory is currently on Netflix Instant view.

reply

2 bollywood movies I could watch again are this and Lahore.
