question... why did this suck?

I saw the flick and it was a whole lot better than I thought. Nothing spectacular but not that bad. I'm just curious why many hated it, and Michael Bay LOL why all the hate on Bay???o_O

reply

I have no problem with Bay at all. People seem to hate him because Transformers 2 & 3 were so badly recieved by fans of Transformers that they forgot that they enjoyed thr first one (generally speaking) and hated the fourth one and everything he touches before they're even released. Its cool to hate Bay now, and apparently him making a movie adaptation of cartoons you liked as a kid, erases that cartoon from existence, thus 'raping your childhood' - the most overused joke on the internet with regards to movies probably.

With this movie, I just didnt enjoy it. Didnt find the jokes funny, didnt like the action, didnt like thr story.

I like the Turtles to rely on their Ninja skills and shells rather than super strength and size, I like the ties between Splinter/Shredder/The foot clan/Japan, I like the foot clan as a ninja clan, I like the Turtles as street level vigilantes.

This movie didnt deliver any of that and instead gave something radically different from what I like: Merc foot clan, hulk turtles, american splinter who randomly learns ninjutsu with no ties to the shredder at all, ironman shredder, turtles saving the city from deadly super viruses, April being the star.

On top of that there were a lot of things that just seemed silly.

But thats me. A lot of people seemed to like it more than they expected to.

Well, I can't speak for everybody, but I'll tell you what didn't sit well with me:

- Everything seemed way too convenient. The turtles and Splinter being April's childhood pets-- which she named after Renaissance painters-- who liked pizza because she fed it to them-- which her father and the villain were experimenting on-- who ended up in the sewer because she threw them in there. Too convenient and made the TMNT world feel very small.

- Not enough martial arts. In making the turtles super-strong, hulking, bulletproof brutes, they virtually defeated the purpose of them being ninjas. Difficult to care about characters who are technically never in danger due to having every physical advantage over their obstacles.

- For that matter, the inconsistencies in the turtles' strength. Early on we see Raph literally throwing shipping containers and jumping straight through the side of a van like the Kool-Aid Man, yet seconds later he can't punch through a pane of glass. The turtles are strong enough to send foot members flying 20 feet, yet they have trouble lifting a gate. If you're going to defeat the purpose of what's in their very name, at least be consistent about it.

- The dastardly and unoriginal plan of the villain-- to get "stupid rich" when he already seems to be doing extremely well for himself, by launching a toxin into the air *cough*Amazingspiderman*cough*.

- Splinter learns ninjutsu from a book he randomly finds, which, mind you, is written in Japanese. The same martial art that the other villain conveniently happens to be a master of.

- Too much focus on April and reducing the title characters to the guest stars of their own movie, similar to Transformers.

- The humor didn't work for me. Just a bunch of innuendos centered around the objectification of Megan Fox. Although I don't think of her as much of an actress, if Michael Bay's going to keep casting her, he should at least start treating her like one, and not some piece of meat for every guy to creepily ogle.

I wasn't expecting anything Oscar-worthy, but it was like the filmmakers couldn't be bothered to think things through and opted to half-ass the whole thing. It felt lazy and unwilling to reach its full potential.

Logan, buddy. It's me, Deadpool! I shot youuuuuu....

LOL whoopsie you are hilarious LOL. That is too funny on Megan Fox WOW!!!! LOL thanks for your input as well. I now have a good idea why people hated Bay's TMNJ. IDK how true the rumors are of him being an *beep* Or that so called beef with him and Fox... Who knows but you''re a funny critic :-)

very well said.

I agree with everything you and the poster above have said. In addition to that, there were some other minor things that bothered me too.

- Cinematography. Too many over dramatic shots for virtually no reason. Too much slow motion. Too much camera motions during certain scenes and so on. Some aspects of the action scenes were done well though.

- Too much random product placement. I can look past the Pizza Hut placement considering the movie, but there were just so many others that had zero business being in the movie. Like the Project Almanac add for example.

- The design of the turtles. I don't know what it is exactly, but there is something really off putting to me in their design. I thought this as early on when I first saw them before the movie came out, and watching the movie I never got used to it.

Overall I don't think the movie was absolutely horrible or anything. Maybe a 5 or 6/10. However, as a fan of TMNT since the 80's, there were a lot of letdowns even though I purposefully went in not expecting much.

Ok cool, fare enough I respect your opinion. I see your point. I loved the secret of the ooze back in the day.... Thanks for your input why.. :-)

As much as I enjoyed this film, I see two explanations as to why it didn't go down too well:

- Eric Sacks. He was meant to be the original Shredder, but thanks to IRON MAN 3 they changed it to a Japanese actor and did a slipshod rewrite making Sacks his lieutenant. They should have just gone with Jap Shredder from the beginning.

- Eric Sachs' plan and the climatic fight to stop it. It was such a shameless rip-off of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN that I can't believe they didn't get sued.

Hm I honestly liked this movie. I rated it an 9 out of 10 (I am not trolling).

I did like the humor and pace of this movie. The 3D was really fun and worked for me.

'The Amazing Spiderman' popped my mind ofcourse but many plots are about launching stuff in the air. And since this all takes place in New York there is no better way to launch on a top corp tower. (or openening a portal to another dimension... for example Ghostbusters 30 years ago and recent The Avengers)

I am really glad how the origins of the turtles are handled to be honest. It was swift and clear, unlike many superhero movies were you have to go hours through the spider-bite and gamma radiation accidents.

I will be watching the second movie in the theaters :)

I didn't mind the origin story but I found the film very dull.. I thought the turtles were alright but I agree, it was too much about brute force and throwing things around that it got a bit boring for me.. No originality. I didn't notice much humour although there were a couple of bits that got a little chuckle from my husband.. Nothing amazing though. Perhaps it's aimed at much younger people than me but I just don't get the appeal... It wasn't funny, the action didn't do it for me and nor did the story - all just a bit of a letdown

No problem with bay, its just impossible not to compare to the original. the 90s film had so much heart and takes itself so seriously like it is made for adults that really care about the turtles.Never does that film feel like it makes fun of itself for being about crime fighting turtles. Im glad this movie exists but its just goofy and seems like creators are winking at us a bit like "hey we get it, they are turtles that fight crime." Also i have a problem with not even being able to look at the heroes of the movie because they are so ugly.

The movie had some great ideas (Loved the turtles held captive in those tanks, loved the electric prongs they are zapped with, great casting of Shredder actor, great design for Leo and Donatello!), but there was far too much CGI for my taste, generic color grading, horrible acting from Megan, and the fight scenes were mostly lame.

I really was hoping we'd get practical suits for the turtles, as the SFX for that can look terrific today, so while the CGI for them was decent at times, they looked too cartoony on CG form.

Michaelangelo was lame, and I preferred the style of his character from the original movie, as he was actually funny in that one. Rafael was OK.

The final Shredder suit was so over the top goofy, and not as scary looking as it could have been.

Splinter's voice was horrible and felt an odd choice.

Overall, other than a few good aspects, the movie was generic.

So much potential, and yet they had to hire an average director and Bay as producer/shadow director 

I personally loved it and am happy to see they're working on a new TMNT 2.

Can't wait to see how well Amell will do as Casey, and oh yeah, Noel's Michelangelo whom is my favourite turtle of the bunch surprisingly. I love Noel's acting!

Mainly, the movie isn't relatable. Watch the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). Read the link so you don't have to read what I typed below
http://www.buzzfeed.com/alisonwillmore/2014-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-vs-the-1990-movie#.xo5KGJOJV

Ignoring the fact that the plot is a rip-off of The Amazing Spider-man, the movie didn't play on issues going on today.Michael Bay wanted to make the turtles adults and make huge insane spectacles. How great would this movie be if the message of the movie was about inequality, racism, rural communities, delinquent teenagers? This movie needed to target young males in a different way than what Bay did with showing explosions and high-tech robot.

Heres a list of changes to make.

1. Setting: I'm thinking about Baltimore recently, and I believe this movie would have been a bigger success if it captured that environment. Schools are poorly funded. Families destroyed, Police failing to make arrest, terrorism, shootings, drugs, The city is the focus, No winter scape and no high-tech labs.

2. Turtles: They should have kept them teenagers (smaller less bulky). sewers aren't that big, and Michael bay removed that mystery and stealth aspect. They're in this violent city growing up, hearing sirens, having a teacher to protect themselves and being aware of their surroundings. "You can't learn asian from a book!!". The turtles are the focus, we should get to know them and really see the four temperaments.

3. Villains- the foot clan more like city gangs. Think Crips/Blood but going for an asian theme. The original foot clan was more compelling, teenagers that skipped school, didn't have jobs and turned to drugs/violence. No machine guns. Just bats, pipes and pistols. Turtles are not bullet proof! This lets the hand to hand combat to be more compelling. The Raid + 5' turtles - murder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI-V0rrlZBo

4. April O'Neil - Fox's performance here she's a fanatic who couldn't do any reporting. Her superiors found her incompetent. In the above setting, She should be a beacon of equality and the news. Reporting on the changes that needs to happen in the community. The turtles would want to use her as a resource to know what is going on in the city.

reply

Michael bay didn't direct it nor he was the writer of the screenplay, he was one of the producers.

reply

two words. Megan Fox.

reply

LOL now that is funny! I should of added in why the hate on Megan Fox also. Keep it coming :-)

reply

No Homoto Yoshi in the origin. A supermodel as April O'Neil. Monk's voice as Splinter was terrible. Splinter looked like Fu Man Chu. Shredder looked like a transformer. The turtles looked like something out of a Frankenstein experiment. The Foot are terrorists instead of Ninjas. April is turned into a sex object which is typical Michael Bay. Whoopi is terrible as the head editor of the newspaper. Vern spends much of the movie sexually harassing April. The ONLY GOOD THING about this movie was elevator scene. Everything else was crap. It is hard to say which is worse. This or the original third movie, Turtles in time. But it is bad.

reply

The movie was designed to milk both generations of fans. The Nickelodeon cartoon is very good and drawing in an entirely new age group of fans. This film is supposed to be for them what the 1990 film was for the older generation. The film just seems lazy and passionless. The fight scenes are flashy, but left me not caring who won or how. The jokes were generally lame. April O'neill came across as a very shallow character. I just don't feel like they cared about the story. I think the hatred of Michael Bay comes from the fact that his target audience emotionally connects with the subject material... while he only cares about getting their $$$.
