Just watched for the first time on Netflix.

I grew up with the Turtles and I heard this movie was either terrible or pretty average from most people. I went in without any expectations, and I actually didn't mind it. It wasn't great, but I felt like it was way more watchable than, say, the Transformers movies. I had a few chuckles here and there and, for once in my life, thought Megan Fox did okay in a role (there were better choices, but she's clearly a little better at acting now than she was several years ago).

My only two BIG gripes with the movie?

1. I think that they tried way too hard with Shredder. They wanted to add too much detail to him that he just ended up looking like a cluttered mess. Kind of the same problem that Bay's Transformers suffer from as well. They just went overboard with his design, and I think that they should've kept it simple.

2. Way too much focus on Raphael. It seemed like the had the most chances to shine in the movie, and his backstory amd personality were pretty developed while Donatello and Leonardo weren't even really touched. If it wasn't for Michaelangelo's silly personality coming through well enough in the movie, he'd be in the same boat as the other two. Overall, there was just too much of Raphael taking the spotlight.

I agree as a long time turtles fan that this movie got a lot of flak, when it's actually pretty watchable. The action scenes were top notch, and the effects actually hold up better than I expected since I'm not a fan of cgi being overused. I also agree about shredder, his simpler design in the original movies was better. But I also noticed the new one looked better in the final fight scene, because they filmed more of it from far away. When he was in the sewer kidnapping splinter it looked overly busy, as you noted. But it got better towards the end.

The one thing I would disagree on is the over use of Raph. He's the most interesting turtle by far, and that's the reason the movies always seem to focus on him. Leo is alright but just falls into the leader cliche, Don is just smart which gets old fast, and Mikey is a lot of fun but not that deep. Raph is the one with the most on his mind, and is internally conflicted about his life and how they live. Plus he's a hardass and that's always fun to watch.

Shredder's design was waaay too Transformers like. The armor isn't supposed to be scary, SHREDDER is supposed to be scary. Like he was back in the original movie.

The William Fichtner re-write/re-shoot was terrible. Should have just left him as the Shredder. This blank faced asian guy was so poorly shoehorned in.
