Such a flimsy, perplexing movie

I am just mystified as to what I was meant to draw from or feel during this movie. Beyond the obvious pleasures—Michael Shannon is a captivating actor; Paris and Vegas are attractive at night—I just do not get it. We are thrown far too rapidly into the (poorly developed) characters' lives for the cavalcade of erotic and psychological twists to have much impact. Every development feels so incredibly low-stakes, even when characters are beating each other up or flying to and fro across the Atlantic to pursue their romantic obsessions. I imagine the first-time director was aiming for an Eyes Wide Shut-type scenario/theme (man's ego and sense of control are toppled by revelation of lover's interior sexual life, sending him into an abyss), but it never catches fire in any way. Not poignant. Not provocative. Not sexy. Not suspenseful.

The reviews were a little too mediocre for me to go out of my way to see this film during its limited release, even though I absolutely could have. It doesn't strike me as a potential classic.
