they squandered their chance at a spin off
Would have been really cool with the new technology not available in 84...etc.
They could have/should have seriously explained why women were now ghostbusting...mortals yes age and at least one of the women were the trainees of the original who were trained and got called out with her friends.

They've trained Slimer from the first movie and he is now a pet--like in the cartoon
