Were romances between German soldiers and French women forbidden?

I've always thought that such relationships during the war were both common and tolerated by the German Command. Yet the show makes it seem like this is forbidden and would lead to immediate transfer if discovered. Does anybody know for sure if the show is accurate on this point?
