The Lord's Prayer in French

In Episode 5, Lucienne recites The Lord's Prayer in French. Wouldn't it be said in Latin at that time? It was said in Latin in church, but was it the custom when praying at home to use the vernacular? I don't know.

reply

People would recite it in English outside of church in America prior to Vatican II so why not in French in France?

reply

Yes, it was known as the people's prayer.

reply

Outside of Mass, it would generally been said in the vernacular. That's how I learned it in the early 60's, and how my parents learned it in the late 20's. Even my maternal grandparents first learned it in Italian (they were immigrants from Sicily) and later learned it in English.

Also, while Mass was said in Latin (until Vatican II), missals usually had the Mass in both languages (Latin and the vernacular) on facing pages to make it easy to follow.
