Is It Worth A Second Chance?

Okay, I'll admit: the first time I saw this movie, I HATED it. I grew to love the other 3 Evil Dead movies, but this one I just couldn't stand. There were just so many things that, to me, popped out as being just plain stupid, yet they meant for us to take it seriously. But I haven't seen so many people try to defend a film I've hated on in a long time. That and the trailer for Fede Alvarez's new film, Don't Breathe, really sold me on it. So for those who disliked it the first time but gave it another chance, is it worth it?

Yep, I hated it on first viewing too. But if you go in cold, without even thinking of comparing it to the originals, then yeah, it's not too bad. Total gore porn though, the gore freaked me out more than the jumpscares!! And the little homages they do to Ash, without actually reprising the role of Ash- very nicely done

You pretty much nailed it with your gore comment.

Sure, there were some decent jump-scares, but the violence and gore in this movie were almost exhausting to watch, and that's one of the reasons I liked it so much.

Admittedly, I'm a gorehound, but a lot of the gore flicks I watch usually have some sort of campy, funny element to them, so it's almost like a punch in the guts (haha) when you get some very, very well-done gore, and the tone of the film is so serious and dark.

The scenes with the nail gun, the hypodermic needle stabbing... Basically any scene with Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) getting absolutely DESTROYED by whoever was possessed, well, even though it was basically his fault, I was starting to feel bad for the poor bastard lol.

I've had the DVD for a year and have only just discovered that Ash appears after the credits (very briefly, in shadow) where he says "Groovy" before it cuts to black. I thought that was a nice little touch...

Uhh the movie is awesome, so if you failed to see that the first time then don't bother.

I also hated it the first time and I watched it again last night in the theater.

It's still what it is. An ultra gory, violent, dark, depressing torture porn movie. It's effective, it's well crafted, I don't find it gripping, shocking, emotional, fascinating or anything.

It's... What it is. And it's called Evil Dead.

Well, this is my NEW personal canon: just mine.
It's a theory.
It's not a gospel.
It's not canon.

Hopefully you'll like it the same way I like it.

Have fun, have a good read. I'm just a passionate fan.

Thank you so much.

If you don't think about it as an Evil Dead movie, it's an ok movie.

No point trying to show mercy to the stupid, they wouldn't know what to do with it anyway

Definitely worth a second look. I liked it more on the second viewing.

And unfortunately, Don't Breathe wasn't very good.

"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"
